## Transcript

>> Hi, I'm Sean Gregory from Time magazine and time. com. We're joined by Lindsey Vonn, the gold medal downhill ski racer. And Lindsey, thanks a lot for doing this.

>> Thanks for having me.

>> What was it like to become the first American woman to win gold in an Olympic downhill?

>> For me, I wasn't, you know, I was just trying to ski well and to accomplish a childhood dream. And so, for me to win- to win the downhill was incredible.

>> What time did you wake up in the morning that day? And what's going through your mind? You know, like, " Okay, I've been training "- you know, your whole life-

>> Yeah.

>> for this moment.

>> Honestly, I was more nervous the night before the downhill than I was the morning of. I got up about- I don't know. It was 6 o'clock. I wanted to go out there and really ski well. I felt sharp, you know, I felt like I was in the zone.

>> Uh huh.

>> What advice did your husband and coach, Thomas, give you before you started your run to win the gold?

>> He just said, you know, to stay focused and be determined, you know. He told me that some girls had had really good runs and that it was gonna take an exceptional run to beat them and so, I think that really helped me just to stay, you know, really focused and really determined and not get too nervous. It's happened before last year in the World Championships before the downhill. I kinda freaked out, you know, I was- I was really nervous. I was- I was shaking. I couldn't, you know, control my nerves. I couldn't- as much as I tried to take deep breaths, you know, my adrenaline was still pumping and- so, I asked my husband to come to the start with me which he'd never done before and he definitely calmed me down and, you know, was joking with me, and that was exactly what I needed and I won the race.

And so, that was- that was our back- up plan, you know, for-

>> Uh huh.

>> for the downhill here at the Olympics.

>> How do you find the strength to ski with the injury?

>> It's hard, you know. It's definitely been a real challenge for me in these games to be able to ski well despite this injury but I feel like every athlete has some type of adversity and you have to be able to face that head- on and keep fighting no matter what. And so, for me, I've just been doing as much therapy as I can, trying to get it to feel as good as it can but just stay focused despite the pain.

>> There were mixed responses from fans as well as other skiers regarding how open you were to discussing your injury with the media. Some claimed that most professional athletes compete while injured without discussing it. Do you feel that criticism is fair?

>> Well, I didn't want to tell anyone that's why I kept it a secret for a week, you know. I wanted to see if it healed up and if it didn't bother me then I wasn't gonna say anything. But, you know, it didn't heal the way I was hoping it would and I didn't ski since the injury and so, I felt like if I didn't- if I wasn't able to race then people would be asking me the same question and then they would say, " Well, why didn't you tell us beforehand ?" So, it goes both ways and for me, I just felt like I wanted to be open with everyone and that was my choice and I think it was the right one.

>> Were you kinda weirded out by the obsession over your shin and how did you deal with- kind of a national obsession with it?

>> It's just an injury, you know, it's my shin. It's an injury that I have to deal with. I don't know. It's kind of gotten to be a little bit ridiculous.

>> What motivates you to get back on skis after terrible falls?

>> I always feel like if I make a mistake or if I crash, I just want to get back up as fast as I can and try it again and try to do it better. And I feel I can seriously need to have a short memory, you know- and you crash all the time and, you know, you have to get back up and get back on that horse and keep trying to ski your best.

>> Have you ever attempted snowboarding?

>> I have and I was- I was bad at it.

>> What's tougher to do? What you do or what Shaun White does?

>> I don't know. He's so aggressive. My husband- my husband said, you know, we were watching him in this- the half at final, we were saying that he's kind of like Yoda, you know, when he- he's always wobbling around and then- and then in that fight scene, I don't know what it was, Return of the Clones? He gets up and just- is going crazy. I feel like that's what Shaun does.

>> How do you feel about the controversy over your Sports Illustrated cover?

>> There's nothing, you know, sexual or controversial about it. That's how I ski, you know. Every time you watch mi ski on a mountain, I'm in that position. So- and I'm fully clothed and it's- I don't know. I thought it was just kind of ridiculous and I actually thought it was a- was a cool picture and I think great for my sport, you know, to be able to promote it before the Olympics is- I thought was great.

>> This is the crucial question. Do the Alpine cowbells pump you up before or during your runs?

>> I love the cowbells. I think it's awesome and my family got a- the Cowbell app on their iPhone and so, they were just, you know, doing the cowbell thing in the finish- I think it's- I think it's a classic part of ski racing.

>> What's next?

>> Well, tomorrow is-

>> I mean, you know, what's next-

>> But, yeah-

>> Beyond the Olympics, what's next?

>> Beyond the Olympics, you know, I feel like I still have a long, long career ahead of me. I've got at least 5 more years of skiing and then I wanna have a family, you know, have a bunch of little rugrats running around the Vonn house.

>> After about 5 years or so?

>> Yeah. I'm gonna- I'm gonna go to the Sochi Olympics and then if they'll- Colorado gets the World Championships in 2015 then I'll stick around for that.

>> And you see yourself retiring after that?

>> I wanna be a somewhat young mom. I wanna be somewhat cool but- I mean, I've always wanted kids. I love kids and that's something that I really wanna do but I don't wanna cut myself short either, you know. I wanna keep going in my career until it doesn't feel fun or it doesn't feel right anymore.
