## Transcript

Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, South Wales on September 13, 1916. Dahl had unpleasant interactions with teachers as a child, not unlike Matilda and Miss Trunchbull. And he decided he'd rather travel the world than go to college. After graduating from high school he took jobs in Newfoundland and Tanzania before enlisting in the Royal Air Force at the beginning of World War II and serving as a fighter pilot. After the war Dahl began writing fiction. His first children's' book, The Gremlins, was a flop. But he had a best seller in the adult story collection, Someone Like You. In 1953, Dahl married the actress Patricia Neal, who'd go on to win an Academy award.

They had five children, one of whom died in childhood before they divorced three decades later. In 1961, he published his first successful children's' book, James and the Giant Peach. He would practice his stories on his children before bed time, and many classics followed. Including several that were adapted into motion pictures. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Witches and Matilda. Dahl died at age 74 in 1990. His books have sold more than 200 million copies world wide. [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
