## Transcript

On March 16th, 2003, just days before the U. S. Military shock- and- awe bombing campaign began raining down on Baghdad, Vice- President Dick Cheney said he believed the U. S. soldiers would be greeted as liberators by an Iraqi society grateful to be free of Saddam Hussein's tyranny. The reference was unmistakeable. It hearkened back to August 1944 when Allied Forces liberated Paris from the despotic rule of Adolf Hitler in Nazi, Germany. But we have done well to remember that those rapturous moments were far from the end of World War II. I'm Jim Frederick, managing editor of TIME. com and executive editor or TIME Magazine.

After the euphoria in Paris subsided, the grim task of actually winning the war still remained. Nine more months have passed before Berlin fell and four more after that before Japan surrendered. Nearly 60 years later in Iraq, coalition forces were indeed greeted with candy and flowers, but soon after the initial moments of triumph, U. S. awoke one morning to find Iraq descending into a spasm of bloodshed and instability that continues to this day. Over its 87- year history, TIME has reported on America's wars with the thoroughness, tenacity, and immediacy that few organizations can rival. During World War II, TIME's correspondents took readers from the beaches of Normandy to the jungles of Burma, from the sands of North Africa to the atomic ruins of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In Korea, TIME told readers of the swift early expulsion of the North Korean army from South Korea by US- led UN forces, the crushing counter- attack bolstered by Chinese entry to the conflict, and the ultimate and unsatisfying standoff at the 38th parallel that continues to this day. " Would there be any celebrating ?," a TIME writer asked a British officer who witnessed the true signing at Panmunjom. " No ," said the Briton. " There's nothing to celebrate. Both sides have lost ." If World War II ushered in a new era of American dominance, the Vietnam War defined a generation, and it shapes the wars that we are still fighting today.

The Vietnam War was one of the longest war in US history. Today, it is the war in Afghanistan. In 1973, as the Vietnam War ground on, TIME said, " Increasingly, it seemed to lack meaning and therefore justification ." The official argument for fighting kept changing and kept being undermined. Today, many think the same thing about Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, TIME continues to bring you some of the world's best and most thorough coverage of Iraq and Afghanistan, in the magazine, on TIME. com, and on iPads, iPhones, BlackBerrys and Android smartphones. We bring you these patches from well- known correspondents, photographers, reporters, and video journalists from around the world who risk their lives everyday to bring the most important stories of our time to life.
