He raises pigs in Cairo. And the Egyptian government is slaughtering all the pigs in the country even though the World Health Organization says there's no danger at transmission of flu from pigs to people. Pig owners are financially compensated for their loss but Ladeed says the one- time payment won't last. >> We don't care about the compensation. We care about what comes after. We got rid of the pigs. You said they should be killed, they're killed but we want places for all these people to work. All these people are not educated. They don't know how to read or write or do any other job. We were raised doing this work, now it's being banned. What is the destiny of all these people? >> Ladeed raises pigs in Manshiyat Naser, the Cairo neighborhood >> where many of the Zabbaleen or " garbage collectors" live and work and the pigs are a key part of that work. The Zabbaleen gather garbage from places throughout Cairo, sort out the recyclable material and feed the organic waste to the pigs. The pigs are then eaten or sold for their meat. The Zabbaleen are among the city's poorest citizens doing a physically demanding and an undesirable job. The flu scare makes their jobs even harder. >> We collect the garbage >> from residential buildings. Now, because of all the media attention, in some buildings the residents stop us from entering. They say to us, " No, you can't come in because you have swine flu ." >> In Egypt, pigs are raised by the Christian minority who make up about 10 percent of the population here. The rest of Egypt is overwhelmingly Muslim and Islam forbids the eating of pork. But officials are quick to claim that the pig call has no political or religious implications. >> We want a solution. >> You wanna kill the pigs? That's fine, we don't object to that. If it's bad for the country, then kill them but don't kill us with them. >> Cairo has developed modern solid waste management facilities but thousands of Zabbaleen continue to make a living processing garbage in their informal way. Without the pigs, there are fewer financial rewards for the Zabbaleen.
