Congratulations to the Virginia Tech Class of 2017. Congratulations. Class of 2017, congratulations. [ UNKNOWN ] Boy, it is good to be here. [ APPLAUSE ] What was indelibly Stamped on my mind was the understanding that we must never allow demigods to divide us up by race, by religion, by national origin By gender or sexual orientation. To me at it's basic, it's down to a simple idea. That every single person is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect. The question we have to ask ourselves of the importance of being good. And decent and loving, morally creative. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Is that do we extend those feelings and those emotions just to people we like, or just to people we deem worthy?

Or just to people who agree with us, or just to people who think like us? Every generation expands its definition of equality. Previous generations fought for the vote and civil rights. They had the New Deal and Great Society. And now it's time for our generation to define a new social contract. One voice is powerful. Two voices are more than twice as powerful. And 10 or 10, 000 voices create a force to be reckoned with. My whole life is an offering in service, first to yourself to become a fully actualized human being. And you do that to your actions and your inner actions with others. Pre caution to the winds, look fear straight away in it's ugly face and barge forward.

And when you get past it, turn around Give it a good swift kick in the ****. > Don't let anyone tell you you're voice doesn't matter. In the years to come, there will be trolls galore. Online and in person, eager to tell you that you don't have anything worthwhile to say Or anything meaningful to contribute. They may even call you a nasty woman. Your generation is unraveling deeply entrenched laws, principles, and misguided values that have held women back for far too long. And therefore, Have held us all back, the human race. Saying yes allows you to find your voice. It lets you uncover new opportunities, and it reveals new relationships.

But when it's time to say no Say it loudly and firmly. No matter how cliche it may sound, you will never truly be successful until you learn to give beyond yourself. Empathy and kindness are the true signs of emotional intelligence. You have been expected to take responsibility, to make decisions, and to act. The heart beat matters. Fears and aspirations matter. The players on others matters. As you leave this beautiful campus, and set out into the world, build resilience in yourselves. When tragedy or disappointment strike, know That deep inside you, you have the ability to get through anything.

I promise you do. As the saying goes, we are more vulnerable than we ever thought, but we are stronger than we ever imagined.
