[ MUSIC ] When it comes to diamonds, bigger isn't always better. Tradition dictates that men should pick out an impressive engagement ring for their fiance, but check this out. A new study from Emory University suggests that the bigger your diamond engagement ring ,. The more likely your marriage will end in divorce. Specifically, men who spent $ 2, 000 to $ 4, 000 on engagement rings were 1. 3 times more likely to end up divorced than men who spent $ 500 to $ 2, 000. You're all in various stages of a relationship or single. Mm. Evan, you're single. You're in a relationship, Alice, and Ray, you're also in a relationship.

Yep. So let's first start with this survey. What do you think it says about the nature of this very kind of potentially big expenditure before the marriage even begins, and then the future of the marriage? Like the statistic shows of 500 to 2000, I think that's already based upon a relationship that. Might come from, they're backgrounds, they're professional backgrounds, don't allow them to spend more money. The more you spend, in some cases it's like you're over- compensating for the love that may not be there? I mean that sounds like a stretch but, who, what do you think Alice? I'm a bit of a romantic when it comes to, like, money doesn't really mean anything.

And so to just have to like spend so much on just a ring, like does that relate to the fact that maybe there's something else behind the scenes? Possibly, like. Right that we've heard about the campaigns the marketing that's like men you should spend two to three months on average on a ring. Ray, what do you think about that? Would you. If it was important to your bride- to- be to spend a significant amount of money on a ring. yes, definitely. I mean. Yep. If I have it, I'll definitely do it. If you have it. If I have it, I'll do it. I mean, it's, there's no question. What's your limit? Limit?

I, I'll do it for five grand. Wow, I hope your girlfriend's watching. [ LAUGH ] she's. This is quite a revelation. She should be, yeah. [ LAUGH ] She should be. [ LAUGH ] Are you going to propose soon? Receive that, ambiguous. [ LAUGH ] I had to ask. Do you think it's outrageous you know, this expectation should still be hanging over guys heads. Yeah, it doesn't sound modern, you know, it sounds like a standard that doesn't really exist anymore. Right, but I have heard of some. Relationships where she pays for her own engagement ring. Alice, what do you think of that? I feel like we're at a point in our society where we can make our own sort of like, like traditions if you will.

An engagement ring is very symbolic, you know it's not just " here's a ring ." I mean, whatever blows your hair back. You wanna buy your own ring, or, or you wanna buy each other rings. But I like the idea of, of giving some one. Yeah. Something as a symbol. Now Ray, you're willing to spend whatever the lady wants. Yeah, I mean. But would you let her buy her own ring? If she wants it. Really? Yeah. Definitely, I mean, as long as she's happy with that, I'm totally fine with it. Cuz it- I'm gonna just go there and ask this though, cuz of the men, it wouldn't emasculate that at all if your? No. No.

I wouldn't feel like my pride or my ego had been hurt at all. Yeah whatever my partner wants is gonna make me happy. But, I do personally like the idea of giving someone something. It's better to give than receive, you know. So I like that element of surprise. Sure. Alright, well controversial topic to say the least. Thank you very much for your candid answers, and good luck to all of you. Happy New Year. And for more love and money videos, stay here at money. com.
