## Transcript

Election fever has hit Burma's biggest city Rangoon. As voters head to the polls for the chance to democratically elect a government for the first time in half a century. And the person promising to bring change to this Southeast Asia nation is democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, National League for Democracy. [ FOREIGN ] At NLD head quarters, supporters scour for mementos for t- shirts featuring the lady, as Suu Kyi is formerly known, and the iconic fighting peacock flag. And LD voters say it's time Burma moved away from its dark past. [ FOREIGN ] Burma has suffered under a brutal military rule since the army ceased power in 1962.

The country only began re- engaging with the world three years ago, when the government, mostly made up of former generals and headed by President Thein Sein, started to introduce reforms. [ SOUND ] On the busy streets of Rangoon, in the tea shops and food stalls, many voters are unhappy with the pace of those reforms. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] If any party hoping to affect meaningful change after the polls, they will have to gain the trust of the military here, a guaranteed a culture of seats in parliament. And the country's constitution bars Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president because she married a foreigner.

But that hasn't dampened the excitement surrounding this historic vote. I believe no matter what a party win, I wish our country To improve, better and better. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
