Today on Dumb Money, what's a bull market? What's a bear market? And why are they called that? [ MUSIC ] Investing terms can get confusing, and if you aren't nose deep in market commentary, you just might feel left out. All you need to know, generally speaking, Is that a bull market is good, and a bear market is bad. A bull market means that there is optimism around a particular market and prices are rising. Ever since the great recession there's been a bull market in stocks. There was a bull market in housing right up until it collapsed. A long bull market in bonds that begin in the 1980s. Bear market, it's the opposite.

In a bear market prices are falling, there's wide spread pessimism about the future, if you've left the bulls and gone in with the bears, then prices have dropped by 20 %. Think 2008, now where did these names come from? To be perfectly honest, I have no idea. Different sources have different answers, one explanation is that a bear came from a 16th century proverb one answer that I like though, says that it comes down to each animals nature. A bull casts it's horns up, while a bear plunges its paws down. Whether or not that's true, the imagery will certainly help you remember what the words mean.
