## Transcript

>> Hello, TIME. com viewers, this is Vanessa Kaneshiro reporting from Whistler, Canada. It's the second full day of competition here at the 2010 Winter Olympics and we caught up with the family of Canadian luge athlete, Sam Edney as they headed off to see him compete in the games.

>> Go Sam!

>> Go Sam!

>> I'm Linda Edney. I'm Sam Edney's mom. He's the top Canadian luger for the Olympics this year.

>> And where are you going right now?

>> We're going to the final men's single run of the luge and Sam's in tenth place and we just feel really good.

>> Yeah.

>> Really positive. I couldn't think of a better kid. I know I'm biased as a mom, but somebody who embodies the true spirit of the Olympics. He's a true competitor, but he's such a fine, fine young man that- I think for him the- I'm gonna cry.

>> It's okay.

>> I'm Iris. I'm Sam's aunt and when she started to cry because I'm her sister, I started to cry, so-

>> How excited are you right now?

>> Oh, it's beyond- it's beyond expression. It's just a feeling in your entire body and you just- are just- I'm so happy to be here and to be part of this entire family event.

>> The Swiss bell has just overrun, so us Canadians- we have to start something useful, so it's a goose call. Go Sam, go!

>> I'm really proud of Sam and everything is just so exciting-- beautiful place and beautiful family and great nephew.

>> You know what, I feel pretty calm today. Yesterday was the harder of the 2 day- of the 2 days because of the-

>> Yep.

>> death of the Georgian luger that Sam knew and so it was heavy. I [ unk ] and so they see him do 2 really beautiful runs safely. I think that took a lot of pressure off of him and be- and then me as the mom. I think they're watching. So right now I feel more peace and excited. We're skiers and my husband's sort of an extreme skier so he has [ unk ] skiing when they were really little. Sam was about 3 and we had him out at Lake Louise where the snow that year was phenomenal. I mean, it was probably 10 times higher than his little body. And my husband thought the best way to teach him is to take him to the very top of the hill and let him ski that high.

[ unk ]?

>> I haven't-

>> Sam got to the top and said- he started crying and said, " I hate going fast. I never wanna go fast in my life ." And little did I know, you know, the more he never wanted to go fast doing anything in his life as a little 3- year- old and then obviously changed his mind.

>> Sam came in seventh on this day in the games, but keep in mind he's only 25 so you just might see him again. Stay tuned for more videos and read all of our Olympic coverage on TIME. com / Olympics.
