>> A fellow singer once said, " Every kid whoever sat around a campfire singing an old song is indebted in some way to him ." Pete Seeger died Monday at the age of 94. Seeger was perhaps just as well known for his social activism as his legendary folk hits like This Land Is Your Land and We Shall Overcome. But his membership in the communist party early in his career which he later denounced got him and his group, the Weavers, blacklisted in many concert halls after World War 2.

>> He went solo. This is adaptation of a gospel hymn became an anthem of the civil rights and anti- war movements of the 1960s.

>> Among his more passionate causes, Seeger championed cleaning up the Hudson River and then Occupy Wall Street in his later years. You need look no further than Seeger's 90th birthday party at Madison Square Garden in 2009 to see his influence. The boss, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and Joan Baez all performed calling Seeger part of their musical inspiration. As for Seeger himself, his family said he stayed strong and vibrant to the end. His grandson talked about the 94- year- old legend Monday, he was chopping wood 10 days ago. For TIME, I'm Cliff Judy.
