## Transcript

One of the things I learned about money from my dad is that, while it's important to spend responsibly and make sure you're taking care of your financial obligations, that it's also important to have a little bit of fun. And maybe spend some money on yourself sometimes. My dad ran a small advertising agency in San Francisco. And sometimes instead of Getting cash for the time on a radio station, for example. Restaurants or airlines would pay him in the form of meals or free credits or seats on an airplane. So I learned that almost everything is negotiable. My dad told me Son, it's just as easy to marry a rich girl as it is a poor one.

My dad told me that I should start saving for my children's college fund now, I'm 26 and single. [ LAUGH ] The best piece of financial advice that I ever gone for my dad was to live within my means Means. He always encouraged me to negotiate my salary and to get what I'm really worth. But he also always mentioned that no matter how much I make, it doesn't matter as long as I live below that and learn how to budget and really control for the things that I have. The financial advice I got from my dad was always make sure you have at least one dollar in your wallet. Nowadays, I think it should be at least twenty dollars.

My mom and dad always taught me that it was really important to save money, not just to have a lot of money or have a lot of things, but because money is what lets you do the things that you want to do. I mean, it lets you live where you want to live. Have the experiences you want to experience. Send your kids to college. And it was really important to take money seriously. The best piece of financial advice that my dad gave me is to really go for things even if they seem sort of expensive in the short term, so If that's moving to a new city to pursue your dreams and your goals, even if the up front cost seems pretty daunting, there are ways to reduce that so you're not totally baring yourself in short term debt or anything like that.

Whenever my dad would give me money to go do something, go out to eat With friends or go to the movies, he would always ask for his change back. Matt definitely taught me to always get a good deal, always be aware of what I was spending because I would always feel really good when I would get home and be able to give him change back.
