You know, we can take actions as students, as faculty, as workers, to fight these budget cuts. >> Can I-- >> Well, right now, we're planning for the strike from November 18th through the 20th. It's to protest the Regents meeting happening down in UCLA during that time. At the meeting, the Regents are planning to vote on the 32 percent fee hike. And we're going to try to stop that. We've been flyering, we've been tapling, we've been chalking on classroom boards, going to classrooms, getting presentations, making announcements, you know. What we're doing right now is sole represented Berkeley because this is a place where students are able to have-- to go out, protest, and have their voices heard. Know, I have some friends who might not even be able to come next semester because they can't afford the fees. >> My major is geography, and I like the fact that I could study the landscape and, at the same time, study how people organize themselves around the budget cuts. Personally, the way they have affected me is, first, my rent got increased at the university housing I was living at, tuition got increased, and at the same time, my financial aid, my Cal Grants, got cut. Well, right now, I'm living in this RV. I've been living on it since the beginning of the semester. And this is my home. This is where I keep my books, this is where I sleep. It only serves as a shelter for me from the elements. And when I decided to come to Berkeley, I never thought I was gonna be in a situation like this. In a university that's as prestigious as Berkeley, I sometimes am walking back and I'm thinking, maybe my home got towed. There's only so much the administration at UC Berkeley can do. So, the struggle right now at the university, as far as I'm concerned, is about what to cut. Not if. >> We've had our periodic downturns. It seems that every decade, three or four years would be marked by downturn. This is the steepest downturn I've ever seen. In the university's budget-- that is to say, the allocation from the state-- the governor imposed much deeper cuts on higher education than he had ever before signaled. And so, that's how it came about that toward the end of May. We were given such deep cuts that are total budget gap, including that gradual disinvestment-- unfunded mandates, if you wanna call it that-- amounted suddenly from $ 67 million to $ 148 million, to be exact. The fee increase for undergraduates that is being proposed would come in to effect over the course of this January to this July. But then, we return 1 / 3 of that to financial aid in order to see to it that students that come from households making less than $ 70, 000 don't have to pay any of the fee increase. History of free speech on this campus. The activism that brings that free speech together in public forums and in organized efforts, it's part of the glory of this place. We expect that there is gonna be protest because everybody is being hurt, and hurt to an unprecedented extent. -[ unk ] >> Well, today, we are here at Sproul Plaza, historic site for the Free Speech Movement. And we are here to demonstrate our unhappiness to the fee hikes and the budget cuts. So, I am here to put my body forward, and my presence, to show support and solidarity with all the students of UC Berkeley and throughout California. >> Is this the [ unk ] where students face massive and ongoing fee hikes? It's not business as usual when workers are laid off. It is not business as usual when faculty are told to shut up ad put up. When in Sacramento, Governor Schwarzenegger talks about deeper and deeper spending cuts. >> Whose university? >> Our university. >> Whose university? >> Our university. -[ unk ] >> No cut, no fee. >> I'm in this situation now because of the current increase and current cuts. And then, 32 percent more, I just-- I just-- I don't know how-- I don't know how a student such as myself will stay at Berkeley. >> I'm not so naive to think that this is gonna stop the fee increase. And I don't think the students are that naive.
