## Transcript

>> This is 10 Questions for Time Magazine. Lance Armstrong. Question number one comes from James Vega in Chicago and it's one that a lot of readers have asked. What influenced you the most in your decision to get back on a bike and compete in the Tour de France again?

>> Cancer is not an American issue, or South American issue, or an Asian issue. It's truly a global issue and it's one that takes 8 million lives a year. And so, just like we've done in Texas, galvanizing all of our partners together to pass Prop 15 just like we did in the United States, putting all the partners together and make cancer part of the national dialogue. We think we can do it with partners around the world and make it a global health priority.

>> Will you consider finishing second or third to be a defeat or a victory? What--

>> Yeah.

>> What is the expectation?

>> Good question. You know, second place and third place is not first place so most people would view that as a-- as a defeat. I'm not sure that I can win. I very well might be second. I might be eight. I might be 28th.

>> Uh- huh.

>> But if we can be success going around the world and talking about this issue and encouraging other national governments, federal governments, and other NGOs, and other corporate partners around the world to make a difference, at the end of a year, we can say, here is what we did. You know, X amount of dollars, or X amount of programs, or X amount impact around the world. I'm willing to get second or third.

>> Do you think that performance- enhancing drugs are ethical in a competitive sports arena? I'm not asking about your feelings on their legality, but whether or not you think it is fair for athletes to use them when competing at all.

>> Right. Interesting question. I've heard this debate before, you know. I think out of fairness for everybody that competes, I mean, I think you have to set the rules and say this is banned, this is banned, this is banned, this is banned. It could also certainly be argued that the Tour de France on bread and water is not healthy. I mean we have another study, but I'm not sure that the guys that do 10 tours live to be 100.

>> Right.

>> But you really-- tricky to have that decision especially in today's times when people are, I think, starting to be really obsessed with this issue and the media has really taken a hold of it and better to just lay out the banned substances, you cross the line you go home.

>> Uh- huh.

>> We move on.

>> From Jonathan James Anger in Minneapolis, I'm 18 years old and wanna be in the Tour. What does it really take to get there? Any advice?

>> It takes-- It takes a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of natural talent. And I think-- I mean, cycling-- I'm biased, but I think cycling in the Tour de France is the hardest sport event in the world.

>> Uh- huh.

>> And so, it takes a huge amount of sacrifice to say to yourself, you know, I think I wanna do the hardest thing in the world. And so, that's the most important thing to start. Matt Bruhn from Indianapolis wants to know how many more Tours are in your future.

>> I don't know, Matt. I've got-- I know-- I know I'm shooting [ unk ] one more. There might-- there might be--

>> Uh- huh.

>> I don't wanna put an end on it. I don't wanna box myself in. there might be two.

>> Now, the big one from Victoria Tullman in Tampa. Why do you have trouble staying in relationships?

>> Great question. I ask myself that sometimes too. You know, the good news is, is that I do have great relationships with my children, with my ex- wife, with my friends, and my family. Very loyal. I've had a few personal relationships--

>> Uh- huh.

>> that the world watched. And so, if you-- if you have two or three girlfriends that you decide to go separate ways, then everybody watches that and says, well, it feels like 20 or 30. But in reality, if everybody looked at their life in the set of five years, how many relationships did you have?

>> Uh- huh.

>> Did you have one? Did you have-- Some people might have had five. Well, then they arguably have a hard time keeping a relationship. So, my life has been an open book and I've-- and I've allowed it to be that way, which I don't know that I would in the future. I think-- I think I would change some of that. But listen, there's no doubt. I've said it many times. I'll say it again. I mean, the only failure that I can see in my life today is being divorced and I'm not proud of it. I didn't-- I didn't aim for that. I didn't strive for that. But I've done everything I can to maintain that relationship with my children's mother.

I tried to improve as best I could.
