## Transcript

Tell us about your new HBO comedy special, and who's appearing with you? It's called Talking Funny and it's myself, Jerry Seinfield, Chris Rock, and Louie C. K. it's not a comedy show as such. It's a show about comedy. Yeah, so I suppose it's like a, a part Interview, part chat show, part sort of, document of of comedy of our time, hopefully. It's for blokes just sitting round trying to make each other laugh. When you say we make people have this feeling of laughter and they pay us money. What if they discover they can do it themselves? They can. They do it themselves. Yeah, but why are they paying us?

Well They can't do it as well. [ CROSSTALK ] They, they are a high They can play touch football too. I want to tell them they can do it themselves. [ LAUGH ] They can play, they can watch each other play football. [ LAUGH ] [ LAUGH ] But. Yeah, I know, yeah. If the guys who make money on the Super Bowl aren't going. If people play football in their backyard they're not gonna watch this thing. [ LAUGH ] What projects are you working on at the moment? Or have coming up in the future that you can tell us about? Well at the moment we're writing about a film, Life's Too Short. Which is third in the trilogy of Sitcoms by myself and Stephen Merchant.

It's a fake documentary, like The Office, but it's set against a backdrop of media, like Extras. We fused The Office and Extras, our two other shows, surprisingly. How difficult is it to balance all the TV, films, stand- up, and podcasts? The only difficult thing is that there's not enough hours in the day, to be honest and. Well there are, but I only work six of them. But, the good thing is that some of my laziness has been mistaken for integrity in the past. Speaking of T. V, you recently made a cameo appearance in the US version of The Office. Was that just a one off? Or might we see David Brent again?

Especially when you consider that Steve Carrell is leaving the show? Yeah that was great fun. It's something that I'd want to do for a little while and the timing was right. But yes, I would like to pop up again. Again, I consider that fun. That's not work. Popping up and pretending to be a putz. Cuz I can tell myself that if I'm pretending to be a putz, then I can't be a putz in real life. It's like a double bluff. [ LAUGH ] Has the American version of the office exceed your expectations? Well, of course. I mean, we didn't think the English version would be as successful as it was. There was a lot of naysayers at the beginning, because where The Office sort of first made a little dent in America.

It was in the industry, and it was a lot of industry types favorite show and it was a darling of the press and they were all saying why re- make it and soon after they'd forgot all that and now some people prefer it to the English version. They're mad, come on. In addition to your prolific output Hm. That's like a dig isn't it? It's not like a great artist. It's not like Rembrandt, is it? When you're, when you're on tele, prolific means, mm, we're getting a little bit sick of you, to be honest. In addition to your prolific output, you've also managed to host award shows. Firstly, can you give us your take on how you felt this year's Golden Globes went?

And secondly. Are there chances of you hosting again? Well, I think it went well. It went as planned. I was quite surprised at the controversy, if the controversy is true. I think the problem with controversy if someone says something's controversial, then it is controversial. Whereas, what did I really say, you know? I didn't say I'm that bad. I teased, I teased the most privileged, richest, most powerful people in the world, a bit. You know, I was having a go at people who, pretend to be someone else all day. They can live with it, and if the Academy offered you a hosting gig, would you do it?

Jerry Seinfeld summed it up, he said, No ones there to hear jokes. People are there to see if they won an award or not. And if I did it again, it would have to be on my terms. And I just don't think they'd ever let me do my thing or even a watered down version of my thing, which the Globes was. Let's not forget, you know, that was my attempt at being quite reverend, and, network, and primetime. If they saw my stand- up, they would shit themselves. You've spoken about your american influences, who in particular do you recommend that our viewers, should watch, out for, either living or dead? Why'd you got, dead viewers.

Oh I mean. I know who sort of my macker, for, comedy and entertainment in general, always has been from, Laurel & Hardy, who nailed, a 100 years ago. It's never improved upon, cuz they got it right, they got what comedy is about, and comedy is about empathy. I can't laugh at someone I don't like. They could, you know, do killer one- liners, but if I didn't like them, I couldn't really laugh. Hitler, had some lovely gags. Didn't like him. And then, you know, the gods of stand- up, Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C. K. and Chris Rock were appearing in Talking Funny [ LAUGH ] with me, Ricky Gervais, coming soon to HBO.
