Cool. Here at the zoo, these big cats are protected by the Wildlife Conservation Society. But the organization also works to help protect animals in their natural habitat, even war- torn Afghanistan. The snow leopard's native stamping grounds include Nuristan, a region in the eastern part of the country. The reason that Nuristan is so interesting is that it is unlike any other site in Afghanistan. It's much more like the Italian Alps, or even the, the Rockies in the United States. Other impressive beasts also call Afghanistan home, like Markhor, which are wild goats with beautiful spiraled horns. Asiatic black bears and gray wolves. The Wildlife Conservation Society has worked to protect the region for nearly a decade. Local people have come to depend on the forest for timber, firewood, wild game and tourist opportunities. But war and conflict have threatened that way of life. And, and the times of stress or conflict. People are more willing to make short- term profits in order to be able, because they they feel insecure about the future. So what we're trying to get across is that actually governance, good governance of areas, stability is intricately linked with environmental management. Recent reports from the WCS are optimistic. Images of wildlife were captured by camera traps set between 2006 and 2009 over an area of about 1, 000 square kilometers. These caught in the act moments are cute. But more importantly, they suggest that many of these animal populations are surviving despite their recent challenges. When most people think of Afghanistan, they think of a conflict zone. But many people there would like their country to grow a different reputation. One of great natural beauty. The U. S. Government through USAID provided funding for this project in Nuristan. And now WCS continues to work elsewhere in the country. WCS helped the Afghanistan government develop its first national park in Bandi Amir which is not far from Kabul. It's already a tourist site to people who are regularly going out. This is something which in periods of, of stress and periods of of deep dissatisfaction and tension, people want something that will provide them with an escape from that, but also a point of pride. And Bandi Amir is a good example of something that Afghanistan can and should be proud of.
