This one is live from the Slooh Canary Islands Observatory. That's off the west coast of Africa. And that looks like a daytime shot. This is a live shot. You can see the dome is on the left hand side, that's where our mighty half meter telescope is. But that bright orb in the sky... Isn't the sun. That is the super moon. Well, the very earliest, I'm thinking back to the earliest pyramids which were not the main pyramids In Giza. These are the stepped ones that you're talking about, yes? Yes. And the earlier ones had more rounded steps, probably from erosion. And even they had little moon symbols on them. Certainly the Native Americans. Every full moon had their own name we don't do that anymore, we don't say, well this month its strawberry month and moon and this full moon is the wolf moon. But the native Americans every moon was worshipped and paid attention to on its own. So be in primitive times. The Maya paid a lot of focus on the Moon, hurling their least favorite in- laws [ LAUGH ] From the pyramids at that time. No wonder. What was the cultural significance back then, do you think? Do you think it was just about the Cold War? That played a big role, of course. It was the only thing left to beat the Russians at. They were the first orbiting spacecraft, the first man in space, the first animal in space, the first woman in space, the first pair of astronauts. Kennedy had to decide, what was left? What could we beat them at that they hadn't already done, and the answer was, getting to the moon. What's going on? Why is tonight tonight a supermoon and why can't we see the entirety of the moon in this particular image tonight? What changes its distance. The ellipse is the favorite shape in the solar system, very few orbits are circular. All right, Venus' orbit around the sun and the four Galilean moons of Jupiter that we love watching here at Slooh, they're almost perfect circles. But by and large almost everything... Gets closer and farther away, and the moon does that with a vengeance. What a lot of people don't realize is that its orbit itself changes shape. It's not even a fixed orbit, and there are sometimes that the lunar close point moves even closer than usual, and that's what's happening now. So we can have a 7 % change from the average in the size of the moon. It's not enough So, that the way it's hyped, often in the media, that you'd look up, and there's this giant thing that fills a third of the sky. [ LAUGH ] Yeah. No, it's not like that. But, here it is. It's enough, definitely, to make a difference, and definitely to affect the tides. But, if you've got clear skies tonight, Go outside and just gaze up at the moon. And remind yourself what an absolutely amazing object it is. And how wonderful it is to gaze at.
