[ MUSIC ] So, Alex Ferguson will likely be remembered as one of the greatest coaches of the past century. Fergy special. In 27 years at Manchester United, he has won an unprecedented 13 league titles and cemented his legacy and his club's legacy in the global imagination. [ MUSIC ] He got the job at Manchester United in 1986. At the time, the club was, in a kind of middling obscurity, overshadowed by local rivals, Liverpool, who, for decades, had been the dominant force in English football. The beginning of Ferguson's success with Manch United, in the 1990s paralleled the rise of the English Premier League on the global stage.

It now generates billions of dollars in, in TV contracts, and, and it's one of the most lucrative draws in all sports, and Ferguson has come to symbolize the kind of regeneration of the English game, as a result. [ MUSIC ] What's distinguished Ferguson over the course of his career is his staying power. His ability to take teams, make them winners, break them apart, build them up again. The ownership structure gave him time to try and fail and then try again. His success only came later in the 90s. Some names like Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo. They've all come and gone but Manchester United has remained and his success has remained.

[ MUSIC ] In the current era, given the money that's involved, and the stakes of the game, it's very uncommon these days to see any coach stay at a team for more than, say, two or three years. For ever since retirement, given the many years of service and loyalty he has shown to Manchester United, marks something of and end of an era. [ MUSIC ]
