## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] My name is Jeff Harris. I'm a photographer from Toronto, Canada. I [ INAUDIBLE ] project every day for the last 12 and a half years. I'd always have these New Year's resolutions about keeping diaries, and my diaries tended to fizzle by February. But I realized I had five minutes, in the day it took to take a self- portrait. I started in 1999, and a lot of the early shots were really very repetative, and boring. But the longer I did it, the stronger my visual sense became. I've just, kept going to this day and it's one of those things where the longer you do it, the harder it is to stop.

[ MUSIC ] I started out as a high school teacher and then worked in the magazine industry. But I was very much a nine to five person and the project itself was a challenge for me to get outside and not make it look like I had a cubicle job. But that I actually was running around and doing a different interesting thing each day. [ MUSIC ] I might have had, you know, one or two a month that were particularily nice silica and those were the images that kept me going. For every 25 bad pictures you take, there would be five days of interesting images. [ MUSIC ] I enlist the help of other people to take my picture.

Not only enlist the help of friends and family but I go up to celebrities. And ask them to take my image. I come across celebrities at film festivals and after music concerts and I only would take the time to pursue people that actually I'm interested in. If i can emulate a bit of that celebrity and put that into the photograph, I feel like I've done an interesting job and. Gene Simmons took my photo so I stuck my tongue out. Billy Idol took my picture and I made a sneer like him. [ MUSIC ] And then there's been a series of pictures Michael Moore has taken of me and I blocked myself from the camera.

All that they get is a little credit. No different than if my grandmother took the picture. I have a picture of me jumping off. [ MUSIC ] Speakers at a rock concert. That's my picture for one day and the picture of me the next day is of me in the hospital because I ended up fracturing my foot in the fall. So, I am really obsessed with that notion of shock and change and that. Even jumping into the lake for me has that same nature of catching yourself. In mid dive and I have a lot of pictures of me diving into water. And this project has, encouraged me to do what's known as the polar bear dip which is jumping into frozen water.

So there's many pictures of me jumping into lakes with snow and ice around. And I don't think I'd be doing that if I didn't have this project. I got diagnosed with cancer in November of 2008. Taking pictures has been a therapeutic experience through that. You know, your life gets turned completely upside down. And the only consistent thing that remained throughout that time is the fact that I was taking a picture every day. I kind of had fun with it and was like if my body's going to go through this total nightmare, I might as well just make the most of it. And I brought my camera in with me to my radiation treatment.

I've had three surgeries and my doctors took pictures of the surgeries and I've kept my x- rays as part of the project. I had a tumor in my pelvis and to get it out, they had to sever my sciatic nerve. And that has left me permanently paralyzed in my left leg. So now I'm on crutches. [ MUSIC ] Since getting diagnosed with cancer, I made an effort to not be a patient 24 hours a day. Canoeing down a river, my brother and me came across this tree that was suspended out like six feet above the water. And I, climbed up the tree and we took an image and it looks like an image that a fully physically third person would take.

[ MUSIC ] It's really a challenge for me knowing how I would be zipping around the city to make compelling images and then all of a sudden be trapped. With mobility issues, and not being able to get around, it gives me something to strive for. If there's a fence, I'm gonna climb it, or if there's a river, I'm gonna canoe down it. I'm still going.
