The generation of Egyptians who have known no other leader than President Hosni Mubarak is also generation Facebook. Egypt is the number one user of Facebook in the Arab world and 23rd globally, and it has the highest number of blogs in the Arabic- speaking Middle East. Facebook, Twitter and Youtube aren't just for party pictures of flirting. They've become slingshots aimed at the regime many never imagined they could take on. Activist say undercover police beat Saeed to death after he posted an internet video which his family said showed a police showing the profits of a drug bust. A Facebook page which was setup on June 11, 5 days after he died now has more than 225, 000 members. Many Egyptians changed their profile picture to one of Saeed alive, bright eyed and clean cut. Others switched to a picture of his corpse, piece missing, lip torn, jaw broken and blood pouring from his head. His family has confirmed it is indeed his shuttered body. Outraged at autopsies which confirmed the official version of Saeed's death that he suffocated after swallowing a pack of drugs, the Facebook page urged Egyptians to hold silent protest across the country. Social networking sites have connected activists with ordinary people for large demonstrations. When outside the interior ministry in Cairo, was the largest in living memory against police brutality. In Alexandria, Saeed's hometown and unprecedented number of Egyptians up to 8, 000 protested along the promenade. For every one of Mubarak's 29 years in power, Egypt has been under a state of emergency. A decree which activist state has turned it into a police state where torture is systematic and where there an estimated 12, 000 to 14, 000 detained persons. Dozens of videos exposing police brutality have gone online. There's an anti- torture website with a hotline to report incidents and there's another with advice on what to do if you're tortured or beaten up by police. After protest spread from Cairo and Alexandria to at least 9 other cities, Egypt's public prosecutors sent a trial two plain- clothed police officers on charges of illegal arrest using physical torture and brutality. But in previous torture cases police officers have received cosmetic sentences and they usually return to their jobs after they serve time. No murder charges have been filed against the 2 men who face a sentence of up to 1 year in jail. Saeed's shuttered face chillingly brought home to an entire generation what living under emergency law their whole life has meant.
