## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] The rules surrounding credit can be confusing, especially in marriage. There's a lot of misinformation out there. Here are three popular credit myths busted. Myth number one: couples inherit each other's credit scores. You'll be merging a lot when you get married but not necessarily credit scores. Sure, lenders will evaluate both of your credit profiles when you apply for loans or credit cards together, but you each maintain individual and separate. Scores. Myth number two, your spouses debt will become a joint liability when you get married. This is false. Unless your name was attached to the loan documents as a co- signer or co- borrower, you're not responsible for your spouse's debt brought into the marriage.

Even if your husband or wife takes out a loan during the marriage without co- signatures, the liability belongs solely to that spouse. One exception, let's say the couple lives in a community property state like California. And, during the marriage, one spouse takes out a loan that a judge decides quote / unquote serves the interest of the marriage. In a divorce the judge could order that both parties are responsible for the debt. And finally, myth number three, banks require couples to apply for loans together. You may assume that since you both wanna own a home together, that you both need to apply for a mortgage together.

This is also not true. Banks don't make any such requirements. Of course, many couples want to co- apply for loans and share financial responsibility, but it's not required. In fact, if one of you has a poor credit score, you might wanna wait to apply for any type of credit together. Since you could face higher interest rates.
