## Transcript

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control found that up to 40 % of premature deaths in the US each year can be prevented. What was more surprising was the fact that, depending on where you live in the United States, your risk of dying from some of the leading causes of death could be several times higher. [ MUSIC ]. The top five leading causes of death in the United States are heart disease, cancer, lung diseases, stroke, and unintentional injuries. These account for 63 % of all deaths, but states like Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi recorded the highest death rates from all five of these causes, compared to states like Colorado and Utah which had among the lowest.

For example, in Alabama there were 3, 611 deaths that could have been prevented from heart disease, compared to 108 that were avoided in Colorado. Dad, are you alright? So what are the states that have among the lowest death rates from these causes doing to help their residents live longer? They include things like having communities encourage residents to use public parks so that they can be more physically active, as well as enforcing smoking bans so that more people can quit smoking and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke. Restrictions on texting while driving has also helped to keep car accident rates low.

As the report shows, we know how to avoid premature deaths. So why can't we?
