There's PETMAN, [00:12] there's Atlas, even the WildCat. All are the creation of [00:16] robotics manufacturer Boston Dynamics. Last week, the [00:20] technology giant Google announced that they had [00:23] purchased the company, its 8th robotics firm. Google's [00:27] effort to develop robots is led by Andy Rubin. Andy [00:30] Rubin is the guy who helped create Android, the [00:33] operating system for all of Google's smartphones and [00:36] that started off as a risky bet. Google, the search [00:40] company is gonna make phones. No one thought it [00:41] would work and it has turned into a huge, huge [00:44] business for them. Google has an indicative, what it's [00:47] planning to do with its betting robotics division, but a [00:50] study estimates that global sales of robots are [00:52] expected to grow over 10 percent annually to $ 20 [00:55] billion by 2016. Google's moon shots are [00:59] projects that are far, far out long term projects [01:04] that can sound a little bit fantastical. Moon shots [01:07] include Google's self- driving car and Google [01:12] Glass the augmented reality glasses coming out in [01:14] 2014. It seems that robotics could be another one of [01:18] these moon shots down the line. Right now mostly [01:22] large companies use robots and they're very expensive [01:25] and very difficult to program. Google's bet may be that [01:28] if they can sell robots to small and medium- sized [01:31] businesses at a lower cost, they'll have huge business [01:34] on their hands. Boston Dynamics robots [01:38] do a lot of things that people do-- they carry stuff, [01:42] they walk upright, they could lift a lot of heavy [01:45] equipment.
