## Transcript

I'm Lily Rothman, with Time Magazine, and I'm here talking to Jason Mraz. Welcome, Jason. Thank you very much. First of all, [ MUSIC ]. Can you, tell us why you're here, that, you have, something coming [ CROSSTALK ] pretty soon? I am. I'm here to talk about a new album that's coming out July 15th. It's called, Yes, and I am, very excited about it. [ MUSIC ]. Can you tell us a little bit about, where that song came from and, what went into the process of writing it? Yeah. I wrote, and then recorded, Love Someone with, my collaborators on this album, Raining Jane. [ MUSIC ]. And, we wrote it while taking a walk, in Louisa Virginia while we were walking down the dirt road with goats.

And tell goats will, will actually stay with you they don't have to be on a leash, they like to be in a herd, and How many goats are we talking about? We had three goats. But I, we, we as a group were five, six musicians and so. The goats, really wanted to stay with us, and we tuned our instruments to their bells. To, the overtones of, their little bells they had, and we just started improvising about life, and, about love. And, this song emerged out of a collective, appreciation, or awe, of what love is, and how it works. How when you give it away, it comes back to you. All of us feeling so lucky, to be.

Musicians, and lucky to be in this family band I think we were really writing it for each other. [ MUSIC ] Someone. It comes back to you. [ MUSIC ]. You know that actually stood out to me a lot, listening to the song lyric about, love's coming back to you. I was wondering, was there, a moment in your life when you remember sort of first realizing that? Even though my parents, were divorced and maybe it was because they were divorced they both, loved me so hard. I think they wanted me to be okay through the process. And through music I always felt loved, [ MUSIC ]. Because when I, let go in a song or on an instrument, and when I sing to someone with someone, I feel that's giving the love away and you get it back and you turn just with, how amazing you feel, how peaceful you feel, how healthy you feel.

[ MUSIC ]. When you love someone, your heart beat, beat so loud, when you love someone, you're feet can't feel the ground [ MUSIC ]. The album title is called Yes. Mm- hm [ MUSIC ]. What is something that you would say no to? Oh, I'd say now to plenty of things. [ LAUGH ]. And I do say no to a lot of things. I actually, have, a somewhat private life, and I love that. So, there's been a few times where, you know, people have asked to come into my world and see more and I would say no. You know, I love surfing. I love getting out there. But there comes a certain time when that, the surf height is just way too large, and I say no to that.

I've also said no many times. I've gotten a lot of offers for my songs to be used, in certain ad campaigns that I've said no to. Only because I, don't want to promote those products, so I, I feel like I've had, a fair amount of no integrity in my life. [ MUSIC ]. To you. [ Music ]
