## Transcript

I'm Jared Malsin and I cover the Middle East for Time magazine. In May the photographer, Yuri Kozyrev and I, visited Northern Iraq to cover the military campaign to reclaim the city of Mosul from Isis. One of the places we visited was the town of Sinjar, which is west of Mosul. Well, we were there a fire fight actually interrupted an interview I was doing with the commander of one of the frontlines. [ NOISE ] It was a sort of tiny glimpse into some of the fighting but takes place almost everyday on 70's frontline positions. [ NOISE ] The town of Synjar was re- taken from ISIS in November of 2015 by a coalition of Kurdish forces along with the US military coalition.

When you visit now its an almost otherworldly scene the streets are deserted, most of the buildings are either partially or totally destroyed. There are about 30 families who have returned to live in the city but it's a very precarious situation because there are still mortars falling on the town and rockets and fighting going on along the frontlines that surround this town. There was graffiti that was actually written by Isis fighters You can see you know some usual slogans. And there's also tags unto the houses and shops that identify them according to religion or sex. So you know [ UNKNOWN ] she had occurred and so on they are targeting anyone whose not of the same sector as them whose not [ UNKNOWN ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] We were in a car for about two to six hours a day.

Driving between different locations where we were reporting. [ MUSIC ] Another place we visited was the frontline at Bashiqa, which is east of Mosul, where there was another group of Kurdish militia fighters who are holding the frontline there on a ridge that's overlooking Mosul. It's very striking. These guys are so close to Mosul that they actually pick up ISIS' own radio broadcast from inside the city. [ MUSIC ] And they listened to this, they said, to get a sense of what their is thinking, but I think it was also partly to break up the unbelievable tedium that they must experience sitting at these positions on the frontlines, day after day.
