## Transcript

>> I get asked about five times a week, " Do you still dive ?" And I say, " I still breathe, so I still dive ."

>> Sylvia Earle is one of the world's best known and most respected oceanographers.

>> Every time I slip into the ocean, it feels like going home.

>> She has spent 7, 000 hours underwater since she began diving at 17.

>> We thought, at one point when I was a kid, the ocean was infinite in its capacity to recover no matter what we take out of it. But now, we know. This change that has taken place in the lifetime of some of us, at least, it's simply not acceptable.

>> The changes she alludes to are many. Our oceans are getting warmer, likely due to climate change. A third of reef- building corals are going extinct, and only 10 percent of large predatory fish, like sharks and swordfish, still survive.

>> Hey. This depth. This?

>> Earle is determined to protect what's left. She launched a movement called Mission Blue, to build support for marine sanctuaries around sensitive hot spots and oceans across the globe. The water she swims today off the coast of Bermuda, she hopes will become one of the first of these protected zones.

>> Sargasso Sea is one big blue hope spot. It's a place that is characterized by this great floating seaweed, the Sargassum, that has with it a real zoo of small creatures.

>> Protecting the Sargassum is no easy task. Only about one percent of our oceans have any protection whatsoever compared to 12 percent of the earth's land.

>> I'm haunted by the thought of what Ray Anderson calls " tomorrow's child ."

>> But last year, Earle received a chance to bring more attention to her cause when she addressed TED, the California- based conferences featuring some of the world's top thinkers.

>> Health to the ocean means health for us.

>> Every year, TED grants $ 100, 000 to one speaker who makes a wish to change the world.

>> Do anything we can.

>> Earle's wish was simple.

>> Campaign to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas. Now is the time. Thank you.

>> She won the prize and since, she raised an additional $ 17, 000, 000 for a number [ unk ], including the curation of the first high seas marine protected area in the Sargasso.

>> If we could do one thing to secure our future, it would to protect what remains of the natural world that keeps us alive.

>> For TIME video, I'm Bryan Walsh.
