## Transcript

Hi, I'm Brian Alexander with Time.com and we are doing readers questions with Tony Hawk. And Tony, you are promoting your new video game, Tony Hawk ride, which comes out on November 17th. Yes. So we will no longer need this. No, don't say that. Okay. Let's just say that we're making this type of action accessible to people who don't want to put years of effort into it and get hurt along the way. Okay. Gotcha. And this is the first video game in which you will actually have the skateboarding apparatus in your home. Yes. Yeah, it's a skateboard controller, all wireless, lots of motion sensors, infrared sensors and it's pretty amazing piece of technology.

Okay. We've got a number of readers questions here. Actually, my are from Cincinnati, Ohio asks, is skateboarding an escape for you? Yeah, absolutely. Skateboarding, I mean, I've been doing it most of my life. I feel like I, I use all of my energy and all of my focus when I do it. It just gives me it gives me a freedom that I don't have elsewhere. And it gives me a way to express myself and be creative, but yet be athletic. And I never found that with any other sport. So absolutely, it's an escape. But at the same time, it's it's what defines me. Some people don't consider skateboarding to be a sport and consider skateboarders to be troublemakers.

What would you say to refute those people? I think you just need to dig deeper than than the stereotypes or the sort of looks of skaters, you know? I think that skaters got a bad rap in the past because they had no place to go. And so they use the urban landscape as a skate park. The term sport rattles people in our industry because they think, well, you know, this is an art form. I believe it's an art form. And I believe it is a sport. You know, there is there is serious competition in skateboarding, so that by default is a sport. You know, many other less athletic activities are considered sports like golf.

I don't want to name names. I'm just saying, you know, in many sports that are many sports that are considered Olympic sports require less physical effort and less talent than skateboarding. With skateboarding being so counter-culture. What are your thoughts on becoming a pop culture icon because of it? Let's just say that every day is an incredible surprise that I'm here and then I'm still able to do it. And then I'm a recognizable figure for doing it, because when I started, no one cared. The time that I turn professional, it was you could have likened it to being a professional Frisbee player or yo yo player.

It just didn't matter in the sort of mainstream opinion. And so to be recognized for that, for something that was totally uncool when I was a kid is strange. It's still strange. And I don't take it for granted at all. You know, it's amazing, but it's not. I never set out to be Richard Simmons from skating. Do you have moments? You just go, Wow. I mean, when's the last single day? Every day. I mean, the fact that I get to travel the world at other people's expenses and take my family with me on on sort of a paid vacation. You know, I went to the White House. I was on The Simpsons. It's just it's all so unbelievable.

Jen Michaels from Columbia, Missouri, Ask what goes through your mind as you flip in the air with people watching in your body dangerously high above the ground. I look up to my mind, How am I going to land and what am I going to do next? It's more about thinking ahead, because if you get caught up in the moment and start to question yourself, that's when you get in trouble. And so I just think I am going to make this what am I going to do next? So there's no room for an expletive or a. Yeah. No, only if the take off is really bad and I don't have my board with me. Then there might be a very loud F-bomb while spinning in the air.

Ward McDougall from Vancouver, B.C., asks, As a new dad who loves sports and wants one day to inspire my new son, I'm wondering what advice you have that either your dad, Frank gave you or that you have given your kids. To to do what you love doing. You know, don't don't succumb to peer pressure or adult pressure. Find your voice. Find. Find what you really enjoy. And even if it's something different and it's something that's not considered cool, if you love doing it, you will thrive in it. And and eventually you'll be happy because you continue to do it. Because that with Frank, with. My dad, you know, I was I was the youngest of four.

And by the time I came around, he had seen it all. And so he just let go of just do it, whatever it is, you know. And I chose to do the most sort of offbeat thing that that of my siblings. But he was really supportive. And I was lucky in that. And I that's the same kind of approach I have to my kids. You know, if they love doing it, I don't care if it's not considered the cool thing or, you know, if it doesn't mean that they're going to get a varsity letter. I want them to be happy and I want them to enjoy themselves.
