## Transcript

The crisis in Ukraine is getting a lot of high- level attention in the United States. John Kerry, visiting the Ukrainian capital, President Obama speaking Monday at the White House, talking about where he thinks Putin stands in relation to this crisis. I think the strong condemnation that it's received from countries around the world indicates the degree to which Russia's on the wrong side of history on this. The President is speaking out regularly on this situation because he needs to keep Congress united at home. He also needs to try to build support amongst European allies to put more pressure on Russia.

That's difficult, because a lot of these European countries to do so much business with Russia that they're reluctant to threaten sanctions right now, other economic measures. They're hoping rhetoric and talk at the United Nations and Europe will turn Putin around. That seems unlikely right now. On the Crimean peninsula, Putin's forces have a stranglehold on all significant military and governmental buildings. In Crimea, itself, the Russian military, and its sympathizers in the new government here, control all of the government buildings, the airports. All of the strategic sites. The president can say all he wants that this isn't like the Cold War.

But for a lot of people, it does feel like the Cold War. We've got a Russian leader, who is determined to expand the Russian empire, who doesn't much care about world opinion, and is being able to foster and rally nationalist opinion at home by standing up to the western powers. The President of the United States, still looking for the right series of steps he can take beyond rhetoric, to try to get Putin to change course. But in the short term, it looks like Vladimir Putin has time on his side.
