It was a kind of recapture of that same physical sense I had when I was there everyday at the beginning. And interestingly, I think it underscored some of the pictures I made. As I was reaching for a similar location, I was also trying to find a feeling that would connect me to the past in the present. We were there sort of midday and sunlight struck the Millennium Towers Hotel and it kind of exploded off the edge of the building. And I saw it and had that knee- jerk connection to a time in 2001. The smoke rose high enough so that sunlight glinting off the Millennium Hotel shattered the cloud of smoke and it made these rays and sort of sunbeams and everything. I made a photograph and I thought it would be an interesting pairing. Walking around in Ground Zero back in 2001, it was so unbelievably dangerous. All the rebar and the steal and the rubble was sticking up out of the ground. It was like walking in a field of swords. So, being back there to see that it was now this void, I mean, suddenly, to recognize that, once, there was this total chaos, and now, it's a kind of quiet meditative order. And it struck all of us that this place was going to be a very emotional and moving experience for everyone. Sometimes, when I was working down there, a single frame of a camera couldn't contain the vastness of the complexity of work that was going on all over the site, 24 hours a day all the time. Making a panorama seemed, to me, to be a way of showing it all in one gigantic assembled frame. So, when we went down to photograph it recently, I went to Leica who is a company that whose cameras I've been using since I began photography and I asked them for this new development that they designed from the ground up is called the S2 and it is a profoundly accurate camera. So, I made another matched panorama and assembled it and I have to say it holds up incredibly well. You know, the workers at the end, they were sweeping bedrock, looking for bits and pieces of human remains that they might have missed as they sifted through the pile. And so, I saw this guy sweeping, carefully looking and I made a picture of him just because I was sort of honoring their devotion. And when we were down there photographing recently, to be inside the boundaries of a quiet space of the memorial and to see a man just kind of standing there, looking over the edge down into the void, it felt, to me, like it was the same thing, just carried on nine years later, the singularity of a little figure up against the monumentality of the wall.
