## Transcript

>> Eighty- seven year old Brillo Escoto was an ambulance driver who arrived at Omaha Beach in the wee hours of June 7th, 1944.

>> Even though I remember, I don't remember too much of it. We came in the middle of night and that's when we enter about 2: 58 in the morning.

>> He's come to the American Cemetery for the first time at the prompting of his wife, Caroline.

>> He came right behind the second wing, and someone opened the road in the right and we landed and no one came up.

>> He told me once that he had a job to do and he did it, the best that he could at that time for that time.

>> The young couple was already married when he shipped overseas.

>> He wrote to me everyday. I had suitcases of letters from him-- everyday, which I made a mistake, I've burned them.

>> Why? Because I figure I got him home, what do I need his letters?

>> On this 65th anniversary of D- Day, thousands have come to Normandy, France to honor those who fought and died here. Every veteran has a story to tell.

>> I was very fortunate. I made it out of the water. I got hit with some flat wood and knocked me down and within minutes, I got hit on my left eye on which is paralyzed. I got hit in both of my legs. I got hit in my back and I stayed on the beach all that day. In my mind, I feel like I'm back in that same time period. It's engrained in your mind, you'll never forget it.

>> Leonard Quek was in the 82nd Airborne and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He was here today to honor his friends who died here.

>> I have terminal Cancer and I only have a few months to live and I want to see this. I was supposed to be able to make it, but I did anyhow, I fooled them.

>> Quek was actually born in Germany and his family moved to the US when he was an infant.

>> I never had any prejudice and I became my company interpreter and we got captured up and arrived where they wiped out our company. Then eight days earlier, I talked to the guard and they've given up us, we were out.

>> Honswa Lopez, a local mayor says that there are fewer and fewer veterans now and we want to pay homage to the last ones. D- day brought together current military families of the fallen and living veterans, as well as people who simply want to honor the soldiers. Like previous major anniversaries of D- Day, the 65th brought the leaders of France, Canada, The United Kingdom and The United States as well as other dignitaries.

>> By the end of the day, against all odds, the ground on which we stand is free once more. The sheer improbability of this victim is part of what makes D- Day so memorable. Lyndon Johnson once said that there are certain moments when history and fate meet in a single time, in a single place to shape eternity point in man's unending search for freedom. D- day was such among.
