[ MUSIC ] The Shuttle Endeavor, logged 25 missions in low Earth orbit. Totalling 296 days in space. 4, 671 orbits for a total of 122, 000, 000 miles. The shuttles first stop was the Kennedy Space Center where it was loaded onto the back of a specialized 747 and flown across the country to LAX Los Angeles International Airport. [ MUSIC ] There it was unloaded, decoupled and put atop a flatbed truck for its long drive to the California Science Center. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ]. [ MUSIC ] There was a certain melancholy to Endeavor's last journey. A ship that had spent so much time moving along at 17, 500 miles an hour, with views possible only from space, was all at once brought to the streets of L.

A. where it crawled slowly for barely 11 1 / 2 miles. [ MUSIC ] After so many flights, most of the shuttles got dingy and dinged. They were no more the bright, glittery machines they were when they first flew. That, many of the astronauts said, gave them character. [ MUSIC ] NASA built a total of six space shuttles. One of which, Enterprise, was never intended to fly in space, and never did. Of the five that flew Challenger and Columbia famously and tragically They met their end in flight. All four surviving shuttles: Endeavor, Atlantis, Discovery and Enterprise have now been retired to museums.

The question was always whether the retirement of the shuttles would be more like an obituary or an homage, whether they would become monuments or taxidermy. [ MUSIC ] The exhibits of the shuttle so far in their four museums, suggest that they are indeed monuments. [ BLANK_AUDIO ].
