## Transcript

>> It's a tradition in soul music for the band to vamp, setting the mood for the crowd before they announce the lead vocalist. Neo- soul outfit, the Dap- Kings, are not ones to buck that tradition.

>> Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How's it running for you tonight? Are you all right?

>> And for the woman who's about to step on stage, that introduction has been a long time coming.

>> Miss Sharon Jones.

>> I get to be in my forties before I even-- someone even decided to put me on a record label. It's hard.

>> Hi.

>> Sharon Jones is the best soul singer you're only just now hearing. -[ unk ]. Bring it here. Come on down.

>> She and the Dap- Kings are releasing their fourth studio album. It's called I Learned the Hard Way, a title Jones says is fitting for her belated success.

>> To me, it means that I would do a lot to get here and that to be-- I'm turning fifty- four soon and this is my fourth album now.

>> You call me your woman, then you go and do me wrong, expecting me to carry on. Like this could always--

>> Sharon Jones and the Dap- Kings are touring on the strength of that album, which moves from the funk sound their going fan base might recognize into straight- up soul.

>> Loving you, oh, is so easy to do.

>> Their sound resonated with fans at this year's South by South West Music Festival where Time cut their famed stage up.

>> You oh. Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah. All right now.

>> So why is a band this good just now breaking through? Sharon's bumpy rise through the music industry is a large part of the story.

>> In my teen, my early-- you know, early twenties, late teens, trying to make it, someone tell you, " You don't have the look. Go bleach your skin ." Literally, told me to go bleach your skin, too fat, too short. And then you stop telling people your age if you're over twenty. You know, tell them lies.

>> you, that you can. You know in my heart I'm over you--

>> And I could have took that another way, you know, like some people, you know, just give up, also " I'm never gonna sing ." But I just said, " You know what? God gave me a gift and I will accept my voice and my talent as a gift. Nothing that I-- on me ." And I said, " One day, people will accept me for my voice and not the way I look ."

>> Yeah. Come on. Come on. Come on--

>> In 2002, soul enthusiasts, Neal Sugarman and Gabriel Roth, were starting their label, Daptone Records.

>> The only vision we had was putting out records that we really loved.

>> They knew the sound they wanted-- analog, hand- crafted, just like their idols at Stax and Motown.

>> One of the things that made sense to us as a label, you know, our headquarters would consist of a recording studio. And I think that is an old- school approach. I know Stax had a recording studio, Motown had a recording studio.

>> So they built their recording studio in this row house in Bushwick, Brooklyn. They slowly assembled studio musicians they'd known or worked with through the years, including a girlfriend of one of the sax players. Enter Sharon Jones.

>> First thing I came into the room and looked, I like, " What do you little young white boys know about soul ?" slipped my mouth.

>> Oh. Come on.

>> We kinda stuck to our vision and seen Sharon who is, you know, pretty much against all odds.

>> When I'm on that stage, it's not like I'm-- I can't think about the music. I can't think about somebody's gonna hit a wrong note, hit a right note. That's why I know they got that. I'm not worried at that department. With them, I sit back and it-- they amaze me. I mean, they're so into this music.

>> All by yourself, but--

>> They live, they eat, they drink soul funk RB. That's their lives.

>> I ain't nobody's baby. Get yourself a new one. Ha.

>> So with old school swagger against a lot of odds and with an electrifying live show, Sharon Jones and the Dap- Kings are bringing soul music into the twenty- first century.

>> You better look again. You better look again.

>> With Time. com, I'm Caitlyn Thompson.

>> I ain't nobody's fool.

>> Sharon Jones. Give it up for Sharon Jones and the Dap- Kings.
