## Transcript

>> A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to list the Top 10 Star Wars fan films and the results are in. But we were so impressed by the films and their work, we thought we get some insight from the filmmakers.

>> Troops is filmed on location with the men of the Imperial Forces. All suspects are guilty, period!

>> Troops is basically a mash- up, what they're calling it now, which is across between the television show COPS and Episode IV, A New Hope.

>> Most people would call this the ass end of space, but I like the small town feeling, you get around here.

>> Rubio's Troops is your number one fan film, and with the exception of Hardware Wars at number six, it's also the oldest of the fan films.

>> In TIME Digital, March 29, 1999, they cited Troops as one of the top 10 signposts of the Digital Revolution.

>> Troops, not only pioneered viral video, it was also the first fan film with a professional special effect. Then, there's RvD2 or Ryan vs. Dorkman 2, inspired by [ unk ] rivalry.

>> Mike and I actually were-- We had never actually met and so we did the first Ryan vs. Dorkman. We had known each other from online on the Fan Films forum and kind of didn't really like each other so much in the beginning. It's more of a rivalry than anything which kind of sparked for let's fight kind of thing.

>> But on a gentler note, there's Joe Nicolosi's Star Wars: Retold, an internet sensation born out of some friendly teasing.

>> Well, I mean, I've seen bits of it.

>> My film is Star Wars: Retold, starring Amanda Boone. Amanda and I were sitting around at dinner and it came out in conversation that she had not seen Star Wars and that is a very influential movie for me. So, I was kind of flabbergasted that someone could go their whole life without ever seeing these movies.

>> They free Hans from the stuff.

>> Hans?

>> Solo.

>> Hans?

>> Hans... Solo.

>> Han.

>> Solo.

>> Han Solo.

>> I sort of sat her down. I'm like, " I want you to tell me what Star Wars is to you ."

>> Right, whatever.

>> It got a lot of attention online. I think she gets some marriage requests. She gets a lot of Facebook requests from people she doesn't know. I don't think she's realized sort of the full effect of the video, but she has certainly gotten some attention from it.

>> I'm director Nathan Pata.

>> And I'm producer David Max.

>> Nathan and Dave also got a lot of attention long before they actually made their fan film, I. M. P. S .: The Relentless.

>> Armor 24, green light.

>> Armor 11, we're secured, green light.

>> Armor 32, green light for drop.

>> Affirmative.

>> Their notoriety began when they manufactured their own stormtrooper outfits long before you could just go out and buy them anywhere.

>> They fly us and they drive us, and we're still walking to get there.

>> So, we just built these costumes because we thought they were unique and will be fun wearing in the conventions or something. And we assumed that [ unk ] covered for the rest of our lives.

>> Remember, Kevin? He made troops probably because of his long search for stormtrooper gear led him to these guys. In fact, all the filmmakers seem to find each other. Trey Stokes who made the Pink Five series.

>> You know, this is so cool.

>> Just happened to be at Ryan Wieber's house when we Skyped.

>> And now, I'm part of a community. Here comes one right now.

>> Hello.

>> Hello, sir.

>> Hello. How are you?

>> Who's that?

>> That's Ryan.

>> And that's where you find these committed filmmakers, with each other online or the festival or special screening because Star Wars is something special to them.

>> I sort of tell the joke / story. I've been wearing the Star Wars belt buckle for 33 years now.

>> Something that inspires the I. M. P. S. guys, for example, to spend 10 years making a fan film series.

>> For me, it's all about the toys, you know.

>> Yeah.

>> We're just a bunch of big kids playing with--

>> You know, bigger toys.

>> Yeah.

>> They're expensive toys.

>> Of course. That's been heavier toys.

>> Here's another fine mess you've gotten us into.

>> Star Wars fan filmmaking is really pure filmmaking. Just made for the love, not for the profit. And that's what seems to have inspired all of our filmmakers on our top 10 list.
