## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] The 2012 Academy Awards. We know who will be there on Oscar night. The Meryl Streeps, the Brad Pitts, the George Clooneys. But it's who won't be there who's actually more interesting this year. Let's take a look at Oscar's biggest snuff. [ NOISE ] I drive. [ NOISE ] Number 5, Ryan Gosling from Drive. It may be one of the most divisive films of the year. Critics loved it. Audiences weren't quite so sure. But almost everyone who saw it Agreed that Gosling was eerily effective, as the quiet, almost mute stunt car driver, who could also be a brutal and bloody hit man. When the nominations were announced in January, people were shocked that Gosling didn't get a nod.

The whole world turned against her, but she never backed down. [ NOISE ] Number 4 is Madonna. When the best original song nominees were announced in January, there were only 2 nominees to be found. [ MUSIC ] Am I a man? One from The Muppets, one from Rio. Curiously absent from the list, Madonna's original song from WE. Number 3, Steven Spielburg. It's not every year that a director of Spielberg's caliber comes out with two movies in the same month, but he was snubbed on both accounts, with The Adventures of Tin Tin and War Horse. Is there a chance that he'll split the vote? Number two Shanley and Woodlief.

You don't recognize the name? That's precisely the point. What's up dad. [ LAUGH ] She starred opposite George Clooney in The Descendants, giving one of the great breakout performances of the year. So great, that some pundits thought that she might walk away with the best supporting actress nomination. I went back to school thinking that that was it, that I was just done with her. I was gonna call and tell you everything, and. And then the accident happened, and But, it wasn't to be. [ MUSIC ] You, grew back, or Course not, gross. And number one, young adult. Directed by Jason Riteman, starring Shirley Starone.

Here's one of the most entertaining, yet disturbing and haunting films of the year. Strangely marketed as a comedy, it's actually a devestating character portrait of an alcoholic and I for one think if it had been marketed correctly, it would have easily scored one of the slots for best picture. Here's the deal, Buddy Slade and I are meant to be together, and I'm here to get him back. I'm, I'm pretty sure he's married with a kid on the way. No, can't hear. [ SOUND ]
