## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Major successful people have figured out, that giving back to the community is good for business. [ MUSIC ] Most of my work truly is working with malls. We began to find various shopping centers that had gone through a declining cycle. Throughout the years, we've been losing a lot of the large anchors. They have been absorbed by other companies or they run out of business. A lot of these shopping centers are declining because the merchants may not be geared toward the Hispanic market. So if there's a large box, then we see an opportunity to reposition that into a Mercado. A Mercado is nothing more than the old original shopping center called a marketplace, that you can find anywhere in the world.

We subdivide this large space. And then, we provide an opportunity for beginning merchants to open up a shop with as little money and as little red tape as they could. [ FOREIGN ]. Since I knew photography, my sister told me we know it why don't we just try it. But I was scared of the rent and the equipment and all the investments. The merchants who are brand new. They don't have the money for the advertising and promotions and all those kinds of things. So our Mercados become really key for them because we take the onus of bringing the families in. [ FOREIGN ] When we started there were very few businesses here.

But now, blessed be God, we practically want to close, we're having so many customers. [ LAUGH ] Each of my malls try to understand the community around it. And provide a reflection of what they want and what they need. This is a Hispanic community. Wait until tomorrow. You're gonna be amazed tomorrow. It is packed. They got mariachis, they got festivals. [ FOREIGN ] The Latino community grows every day. It grows a lot. [ MUSIC ] [ FOREIGN ] To come here and say I'm going to share with others like me. It changes the community. Because it makes the Latino people themselves come here and feel comfortable.

[ MUSIC ] In Mexico, Latin America, they all go to the town square So we decided to create this little town feeling within the mall itself. The events that they have every weekend brings in a lot of people from Waco, [ UNKNOWN ] [ UNKNOWN ]. And they said that they've never seen places like these, never. We have the food court. We have a lounge. We have bakeries. We have quinceneras stores. In some places, we actually have chapels with a mural of the virgin of Guadalupe for example. It's having the mall or the mercado become a home away from home. The Mercado reminds of us of our little Mexico that a lot of people left behind.

They come in here and they remember they're, they're Mexico now. [ MUSIC ] Can this business practice work for other ethnic groups or other communities. Absolutely. So if a community is, is East Indian or Vietnamese or Mennonite in Pennsylvania. By listening to the consumer, you can in an instance, reflect what's outside them all. If it's an immigrant community, they are almost by definition entrepreneurs. They didn't leave their country unless they were risk takers. That's an entrepreneur. And the true American dream is not necessarily owning a home, it's determining your economic well being.

So by providing a place where that individual can open up a business and reach the American dream. You are in essence creating a tremendous amounts of benefit to the community. [ FOREIGN ] Coming here to La Grande Plaza is like saying here they will give me the opportunity to realize my dreams. Succeed as a person financially. It's something special.
