The former navy pilot, Vietnam prisoner of war, republican presidential nominee and 30 year US senator leaves behind a complicated legacy. One that he addressed in his HBO documentary. I've been tested on a number of occassions. I haven't always done the right thing. Prior to his death, McCain said his current would be his last. And discussed that decisions impact in his memoir " The Restless Wave ". He wrote " I'm freer than colleagues who will face the voters again. I can speak my mind without fearing the consequences much. And I can vote my conscience without worry ." But even before his diagnosis McCain was viewed as a maverick. And often forgoed party lines. He was a key vote for both sides of the aisles on issues such as campaign finance and healthcare. And, the last year alone, he helped Senate republicans ensure their tax reform legislation past the chamber, but voted against Trump's first big legislative push dramatically rejecting majority leader Mitch McConnell's healthcare proposal that would have repealed much of Obamacare. McCain's voting record was rarely in line with Trump's position. Holding the fifth lowest rate of any Republican senator. McCain had long feuded with President Donald Trump whom he believed was leading the Republican party and the American people astray. Stop listening to the bombastic loud mouths on the radio and television and the internet. To hell with them. They don't want anything done for the public good. We are an important check on the powers of the executive. Whether or not we are of the same party, we are not the present subordinates. We are his equal. Even posthumously, McCain hit back at Trump writing, we weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment, and hatred, and violence in all the corners of the globe. We weaken it when we hide behind walls rather than tear them down. As the country mourns the Senator who's receving a cross country funeral prosession in both the nation's capital and in Arizona before his official burial at the US Naval Accademy McCain's death has dramatic consequences for his beloved senate. In the near term, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey will appoint a replacement who will likely select a more conventional Republican, making it easier to wrangle together the 51 Republican Senators needed for tough votes, but the cloud of Arizona's primary race lingers over McCain's seat. Now, how does Senator John McCain's death reshape the Senate? So whoever is picked to replace him will likely be a more reliable Republican vote. It'll also be adding another Republican to the Senate because he's been gone all year battling illness There is some chance that his wife, Cindy McCain, could be picked to replace him, and there has been precedent for that, but either way this is going to be a continued shuffling for the senate and whoever is picked will serve through 2020. Now how did the race for Senator Jeff Flake's seat impact the decision for McCain's replacement? So the establishment pick, Martha McSally, won last night, which means it's not really clear what the governor is going to do. Mm- hm, now with McCain's death will we see a resurgence in his type of politics in the Republican party? Probably not, McCain's centrist politics has lost out time and again. In the last two years to President Trump's more hard line brand. You saw that with McSally running away from McCain in a lot of ways in this primary, so this marks the end of an era for Republican politics probably. All right, Michael, thank you for your insights.
