## Transcript

Amazon has found itself in some legal trouble following millions of dollars of allegedly unauthorized in- app purchases. The U. S. Federal Trade Commission is suing Amazon because it alleges the company allowed children to rack up hundreds of dollars in charges without parental permission. Many of the apps intended for children offer a virtual currency like coins, stars, acorns, etc. Usually these currencies are acquired during game play. But large amounts can be acquired by spending real world money. And, that's were the FTC complaint comes in, Amazon's in- app system allowed children to incur unlimited charges on their parent's accounts without permission.

The complaint details one story, in which a child garnered $ 358. 42 in unauthorized charges. And when parents sought a refund for those charges, they faced a refund process that is unclear and confusing, involving statements that do not explain how to seek refunds for in- app charges. The complaint also points out one particularly damning detail. While outwardly the company didn't acknowledge the problem, Amazon's own employees referred to these out of control unauthorized charges as a quote, near house on fire situation. Tech Outlet Recode quotes Amazon's reaction to the suit. No one is more focused on creating a great experience for customers than Amazon.

Pursuing litigation against a company whose practices were lawful from the outset, makes no sense and is an unfortunate misallocation of the Commission's resources. Amazon made several changes to its in- app purchase policy before the FTC moved forward with its suit. One change required a password for charges over $ 20. The next update required a password for all charges, but only on certain devices. But the FTC had already made the decision to sue Amazon by the time it had made the second update. The law suit will require Amazon to offer refunds to those consumers who incurred unauthorized charges.

And will force the company to ensure all charges require consent in the future. Thanks for watching. I'm Micah Sargent.
