Both sides have engaged in what I call game playing, okay? And Time reporter Nate Rawlings is following the case for Newsfeed. We asked him some questions you might have if you're just now starting to follow the case. Or if you need a refresher on what's happened so far. Two year old Caylee Anthony was last seen alive on June 15th, 2008. But she wasn't reported missing until July 16th, what took so long? For the week leading up to Caylee's disappearance, her mother Casey had been telling her parents Cindy and George that Caylee was staying with the nanny. This turned out not to be true, and then Cindy, Casey's mother finally filed a missing persons report on July 16 2008. How long does it take to find Caylee's body? For six months there was a large search because people thought that she might still be alive. In December of 2008 a meter reader eventually found her body just a little bit off of the highway, only a quarter mile from the Anthony family home. It sounds like everybody's story has been changing a lot. Maybe you just simply need to tell me what your theory of defense is. At least somebody try to explain it to me. What's the story the defense is sticking to? The defense said, in their opening statements, that Caylee accidentally drown in her grandparents' pool, and then Casey's father George then disposed of the body. George has denied these accusation for the entire trial but the defense is sticking with their story. I've seen two different judges for this trial. Why did they switch? The original judge in case was then Stan Strickland, after it was reveal that he spoke with a blogger judge Strickland stepped down. And Judge Belvin Perry Jr ., who's been head of the ninth circuit court in Florida for the past ten years, then took over the case. Why has the science in this trial been so controversial? Several forensic scientists have testified in this case, for everything from computer analysis to bugs to decomposition. Usually forensic evidence is among the most compelling for a jury. But a lot of the evidence in this case is controversial. Specifically, vapor analysis, that the prosecution says confirms that there was a dead body in the trunk of Casey Anthony's car. Others in the scientific community, and a lot of experts in forensic science say that while it's not junk science, that vapor analysis isn't ready to be put in a court just yet. Based solely on our data from our test, I can not conclusively determine that those, the presence of those compounds indicated that there had been human remains in the trunk of the car. How can computer forensics help in this case? Forensic computer scientists can actually find searches and data even after it's been deleted. And computer evidence is compelling because it's fairly fool proof. But the only thing computer scientists can't do is place the person at the computer. The prosecution has said that Casey Anthony conducted Internet searches for how to make home made chloroform and that she used the chemical to subdue her daughter. But late in the trial, Cindy Anthony said that she actually conducted the searches for chloroform. Were you home on March 17 of 2008. Between 1: 43 and 1: 55 p. m. If those computer entries were made, then I made them. If it turns out that Cindy was not the person at the computer and that she lied on the witness stand, she could be charged with perjury. Does Casey Anthony have to take the stand? No, Casey Anthony does not have to take the stand, but it is her right to testify in her own defense. However, early in the case, Casey Anthony, lied to investigators repeatedly. And there's a lot of speculation that if she does get on the witness stand, the jury won't believe anything she says. What happens if Casey Anthony is convicted? Casey Anthony's trial is a capital case, meaning that, if convicted, she could receive the death penalty. But there have been recent challenges to Florida's death penalty statutes. So the defense has actually filed for a mistrial. If Casey is convicted, she can appeal. And there is a lot of speculation that the appeal could come from the forensic evidence. That some experts say should not have admitted in court. But if the mistrial goes forward, a new jury will have to be seated. And the case will begin all over again at the very beginning.
