## Transcript

While enemy fighter Ann Osman prepares for only her second bout, female Muslim athletes have been competing for years from Turkey's [ INAUDIBLE ] appearance in the 1936 Olympics to Nawal El Moutawakel's gold medal in the 84 Games. What was once a rarity is becoming more common as many Muslim countries and sports organization relax their laws, from tennis to track [ INAUDIBLE ], here are some of the female Muslim athletes who have paved the way. Zahra Lari. The Gulf state of the United Arab is not known for it's figure stating, but Lari beat the odds and will represent the UAE in Budapest as a new member of the international skating union.

Shirin Gerami. Gerami became the first Iranian female triathlete to take part in the World Championships last fall. More impressively, she completed all 3 events, swimming, biking, and running, covered head to toe in full traditional Islamic attire. Bilqus Abdul Qaadir. After breaking the Massachusetts High School basketball scoring record for both boys and girls, Abdul- Qaadir became the first NCAA division one female basketball player to wear a hijab on the court. Ibtihaj Muhammad. Following in the footsteps of Turkish fencer Halet Çambel, Muhammad became the United States' first female Muslim fencer in international competition in 2010.

Sania Mirza. Hailing from India, Mirza became the highest ranked Indian tennis player for a decade on her way to winning 2 Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles. [ NOISE ]
