[ MUSIC ] This was supposed to be a breakout year for virtual reality. Two high profile headsets, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive went on sale. Meanwhile, new games, movies and other VR experiences keep coming out. But VR has yet to hit the mainstream. Extreme. One big problem is cost. High end headsets costs over $ 500 and they need an expensive gaming computer on top of that to work. Sony thinks it has a solution. The PlayStation VR, a virtual reality headset that'll go on sale October 13th starting at $ 400. The catch, you'll need a PlayStation 4 to use one. But Sony is banking on that fact that more than 40 million PS4 exists in the wild.

Meaning it has lots of potential customers lined up just ahead of the holiday season. The Playstation VR is shipping with 50 or so games available and there's lots more on the way. There's some solid exclusives here too like new Batman and Resident Evil game And if you're playing with friends, one person can use the headset while the rest play on a TV screen the old fashion way. Making VR a little more social than it's been in the past. That said, the PlayStation VR isn't as powerful as the Oculus or the Vive. It also requires a boat load of cables. Which can be pretty annoying. Meanwhile, the camera and the move controllers aren't sold with the headset.

So most buyers will probably find themselves shelling out $ 500, not $ 400, for the all- inclusive starter kit. Will PlayStation VR finally push virtual reality into the mainstream? It certainly has the potential to be a big hit. But it may be a few more years and another generation of headsets before VR really takes off with the crowd beyond hardcore enthusiasts and gamers. But if you've been itching to try Virtual Reality and you already have a PlayStation 4, this is a pretty great way to get started. That's so awesome. [ MUSIC ] I don't. Geez!
