## Transcript

The European Court of Justice ruled in May that Google must comply with European citizens' requests to remove inadequate, irrelevant, or no longer relevant search results on it's European sites. Now that the tech company has begun honoring the so- called right to be forgotten requests, publications have been notified, and they're less than pleased to say the least. With a headline like, why has Google cast me into oblivion, it's pretty clear that the ruling and subsequent removal of search results encourages a certain amount of pathos. BBC economics editor Robert Peston's article criticizing former Merrill Lynch Chairman's Stan O'Neil has been hidden in Google's European search results.

Peston says Google effectively removed his article from the public record and The Guardian which has also been notified of forgotten search results says publications must fight back because editorial decisions belong with them, not Google. The outlet has even seemingly created a Twitter account where it plans to share links of forgotten articles. The Financial Times quotes former Labour Culture Secretary, Ben Bradshaw, who says this outcry might in fact be exactly what Google wants to have happen. It is either a mistake or could be an attempt by them [ Google ], to whip up a storm of indignation against the regulatory authorities in an attempt to influence the bigger battles to come.

And if even if this wasn't Google's intention, a writer for Marketing LAN says the removal of links could have the exact opposite effect of what the European Court of Justice was going for. Because as Google continues to comply with these requests, more publications might go the way of The Guardian by choosing to publicly point out articles removed under the ruling. Right to be forgotten or not, Google has made it clear its US based site will still display unfiltered results, a site that's accessible from the bottom right corner of the European page.
