I don't remember the 12 surgeries I went through. From when I first heard what happened or understood what happened I been told I was minutes from death and that my fiance one month from her marriage date Saved my life. [ MUSIC ] It's always blown me away that I've been to all these crazy places and done all this stuff and I spent my life looking for the edge, and then I crossed it. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] I bet you didn't think you'd be building this camera to make a doc about yourself. [ LAUGH ] No. I definitely did not think that. [ SOUND ] [ MUSIC ] Against myself not trusting my memories sometimes and, [ MUSIC ] Having to have these flashbacks. [ MUSIC ] In the beginning of months ago, it was hundreds of times a day, I was unable to remember anything or You know, I'll just blank. It was a nice day. So, he was out on his motorcycle. I drove. I was following him. And then I was approaching his lights. I thought they looked really close to the ground. [ NOISE ] I just remember seeing his body and this kind of impossible shape. His whole face has been crushed, so there is a really strange sound coming out of his body but I can see his chest rising, so I knew he was still breathing. I was talking to him Telling him he would be okay. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] I was riding my bike up on Sola highway and I was hit head on by a drunk driver. We're about to go in roughly seventy Miles an hour. I wasn't wearing my helmet. Technically, I died twice in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. I was told that Jared had a broken femur, broken ribs, broken pelvis. And the scariest injury for me a traumatic brain injury. He was in a coma and then it's a few days and then was a week and it was almost two weeks. When he first. Started opening his eyes. You could see, he wasn't taking anything in. That was really scary to see him staring right at me and just to know that there's nothing functioning behind his eyes. [ MUSIC ] One day I was sitting next to him and I was holding his hand And the nurse came in, and she happened to ask that day who is this person next to you? And he looked right at me, and he said I don't know, we've never met before. [ SOUND ] If you don't know who I am and we've never met before, why are you always kissing me and holding my hand. And he said " Because it makes me feel not scared ". So then, from that day forward, I would remind him, pretty much every couple hours, I would say I'm Billie, I'm your fiance, we're gonna get married. And he'd get really excited about it. Of course he'd forget an hour later. I would ask him, who am I, what's my name? He'd say, I don't know. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] Can you remember the last time you saw Jerry? No. I can't it's been pretty frustrating honestly. I don't know where he went. It's like he just disappeared, and literally he was there and disappeared, was just gone. [ MUSIC ] My name is Jared Moossy, I am a photographer slash Photographer for the past 15 years I've been working in places like Afghanistan and Juarez, and Somalia, and you name it. I've been to four wars. I've seen all kinds of crazy things, put myself through all kinds of crazy [ MUSIC ] These situations. I feel like with the type of work that I had done. I was always conscious and aware of death and how close we are to it. I don't think that's immortality [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] You said you don't remember this one? I don't. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] I'm assuming Billy took these pictures cuz Looks like I'm in a wheelchair there. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] The thing with being a photographer is I've just taken thousands and thousands and thousands of photographs. And I now have Years of memories built up and being able to go through the amount of photographs I have has been able to help me remember my life. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] It's an interesting thing to not know [ MUSIC ] And I always had a bad memory before the accident. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] My friends call me flakey. The things I needed to remember I did, and I took lots of notes. And by lots notes I took lots of photographs. Those are my dad's. [ MUSIC ] I don't remember this picture. When or where, why. [ MUSIC ] This picture, I can remember being cold I could remember riding through light snow that day, but I'm not totally sure. [ MUSIC ] I don't remember that one either. I'm guessing Afghanistan but not sure, pretty sure that was in Kabul I can't remember if I was on assignment of it I was just there. I remember the wind, the way it blew. It was like walking through a wall of sand or dirt. Beast day was with some of the rebels in Syria. I can't remember all the details of that trip, but I can remember it being a pretty heavy trip. All war is scary but I can remember that one being intense. I'm remembering I was Getting bucked [ LAUGH ] off that horse. I [ LAUGH ] forgot about that, wow. [ MUSIC ] Looking at these photographs, it brings a lot back. That's bringing back other moments in memories [ MUSIC ] For someone else to rob me of my memory of my mind. It's been difficult to stay positive. [ MUSIC ] Good job. This is where I'm feeding you, but your eyes are still closed. It's crazy. Wow. But I was still in a coma. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Look at all those tubes. Wow, look at my eye. This was even, yeah, this was when they sewed your eyes shut, cuz they knew your face was gonna swell super bad Wow. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]. Golee. That hurts so bad. Why do you want to **** with me. I going to lay down. My god. [ INAUDIBLE ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Just seeing yourself being so vulnerable and depressed, or you just don't remember having those low times? And we're having this little times and just, [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Seeing myself cry to you. It's hard. I've always wanted to be the first thing you cried to. Obviously I'm very thankful for the support you gave. Still hard seeing that. I wanted to be close to you but was scared to even touch you. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] I know I've said it numerous times that what you went through was worse than what I went through. Yeah, I was hit. I really got **** up. I was knocked out. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] To see this. Everyday. Yeah, it's hard. [ CLEARS THROAT ] [ MUSIC ] Jared's body was just a shell, and he was just a ghost of the man that I knew before. It was really difficult. To try and keep a connection with this person who had, overnight become a stranger to me. To look at someone that you know and love, and just know that The person that you knew no longer exists. [ MUSIC ] Have you ever asked yourself who you are? [ MUSIC ] Why you do what you do. [ MUSIC ] Or why you did what you did. [ MUSIC ] A lot of my memories are good. Even the ones that were bad are good. I thought I understood life in a really strong way. What experience is. I didn't know anything. I didn't. [ MUSIC ] I do now. [ MUSIC ] When I came home it was hard because I couldn't remember [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Where everything came from. I'm remembering being overloaded mentally by how much visually I was taking in, by how much I was seeing. [ MUSIC ] From when I was a kid, I still collect little trinkets and little things that I put up in the shelf all over the house. From every country that I've ever been to, I've taken one stone. And usually a souvenir kind of thing to hang on the wall, or from the shelf, or just something that I like [ MUSIC ] Couldn't remember where were they came from. [ MUSIC ] Ain't still coming back. [ MUSIC ] When first came home, the two dogs that we have [ MUSIC ] They're not small dogs. They're strong. And, I couldn't remember that much about them. I could remember loving them, and them being our dogs. And so, for the first almost month, I wouldn't let them get near me. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] And I can remember, having one of those moving forward moments where I was able to like kneel down and pet them and give them love for the first time. And it feeling so great [ MUSIC ] I had a dream in mid March that for the first time, It woke me up. My heart was beating like crazy. I think that dream was the impact. I could remember saying goodbye to [ UNKNOWN ] flash lights. I don't remember the accident, I don't remember, [ MUSIC ] Anything about it. But I remember that dream. And I remember waking up feeling scared. [ MUSIC ] And now I've been in countless close calls, IEDs, front line And I'm just now getting to the mental capacity to process what happened. And from everything I went through, I mean, I can't believe I'm alive. [ MUSIC ] I am afraid of death. I am still afraid of death. [ MUSIC ] And I feel like we're just like plants. We rise and we fall. Our season's a little bit longer. By still season, I'm afraid to die. [ MUSIC ] [ LAUGH ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] All right, man. ****, yeah. The center of gravity's pretty low, so that's a good thing for you. You okay with me doing this? Yeah? It's your choice, baby. Okay. I'm not real comfortable with it. But it's your choice. I respect that. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Okay. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] You got it buddy. Aw this is a **** trip. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] Today marks the one year anniversary of the motorcycle accident that I was in. Today's a big day. Today's the anniversary of my rebirth. [ SOUND ] I'm happy to be breathing. I never had experienced anything like what I'm experiencing right now. It's changed my life. [ MUSIC ] I got this shot of you taking off. Yeah. [ LAUGH ] [ MUSIC ] [ LAUGH ] [ INAUDIBLE ] Aw. [ SOUND ] I did it. [ INAUDIBLE ] [ LAUGH ] I did it. [ SOUND ] I know it's nothing, but it's something It's okay for me. [ INAUDIBLE ] did it. I was so scared [ BLANK_AUDIO ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] Prior to the accident, I mean, if you had asked me where love comes from or where that emotion comes from, I would say it stems from the memories, the things that you share with The person, you know, the things that you know about their lives and how you communicate and all that stuff. And now to know that he was still completely in love with me without knowing any of those things, its definitely changed my perspective on it. [ MUSIC ] That person that you want to be around also is the reason you are around. It's incredible. [ MUSIC ] [ APPLAUSE ] I will always do everything I can And for her always with everything every part of me. [ APPLAUSE ] Mr. and Mrs. Lucy. I call her my Luce, my light. Everything that I do Is based around life. Everything is based on life and she's my life. She's my loose. I'm a lucky man. [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] You got it. You'll see. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] It felt horrible. [ MUSIC ] To have my memory taken away. It still does. Back still, I remember things incorrectly. I mix things up. [ MUSIC ] Is it getting better? It is. I am remembering more? [ MUSIC ] I am. [ MUSIC ] The out of focus makes mash of shape, and form and color. That's our life. It's not just our dreams or Our nightmares, it's our life. [ MUSIC ] And there are times we get to focus, [ MUSIC ] On the moments that we'll remember.
