## Transcript

>> I'm Kira Pollack, I'm the Director of Photography at Time Magazine. And this week we have a special issue called the Yearend Pictures.

>> So this is a tattered airship, also known as an AeroStaff, which is used by the military.

>> This is a wonderful picture taken by the photographer, Richard Mosse. He is a young photographer. He went to Iraq in the spring.

>> It was a very cheap form of surveillance. I believed they mount enormous camera on the bottom of that blimp and they raised this airship up into the air with this enormous long lenses and--- at the periphery and over the periphery of the base.

>> Richard uses an 8 X 10 boxy landscape camera, very old school and he makes-- he studies beautiful pictures of landscapes and this was a particular image that he saw that he became obsessed with.

>> Several evenings I went out with my camera to photograph it and I feel that this is the phase of modern warfare. We have sort of unmanned surveillance drones and we have tethered blimps watching the skies. There's something very sinister to me about the form of modern warfare totally impersonalized that. It looks like a giant bomb, doesn't it?

>> This is a very important event of the year, Senator Edward Kennedy's funeral. This was a particularly striking picture. It was made in Arlington Cemetery. It was made when the light was going down.

>> There's always a place in the dark, but when I turned back around, I couldn't even see the casket. That's how dark it was.

>> And all of the cameras left the family in the grave site and this photographer, Doug Mills who is a New York Times Style photographer was still at the cemetery when the cameras all went away. And he made this beautiful poetic picture. To me, this is the best picture from this event. This is a wonderful, wonderful delightful picture of a humpback whale, taken by the photographer, Kate Westaway.

>> To start, well I was absolutely terrified.

>> She was snorkeling in Turks and Caicos and she was photographing this humpback whale path under water.

>> He would come and check it out and surf along and come and splash around us and tail slap and breach.

>> And there's a series of pictures that she made that looked just incredible being this close to the whale.

>> I was just very fortunate that he seems like the [ unk ] of my lens. I think he could possibly see his reflection, which is why he kept coming so close.

>> We launched in October 15 of 1997 and arrived in Saturn on the 1st of July of 2004.

>> The pictures from Saturn this year were so exceptional and so beautiful. They were very important pictures that should be featured in this issue.

>> Some very major discoveries of the rings, the dynamics of the rings, how the moons, gravity, shapes, the different rings and to the different gaps that we see.

>> Particularly because of the technology and this Cassini spacecraft team that have been making the pictures. This is an image from a wonderful photographer, Andrew Moore, who's based in New York, who has been doing a project on Detroit for the last 2 years. Just incredible landscape pictures, interior pictures of empty spaces.

>> I've known about of, you know, various ruined mansions of Detroit City in [ unk ] being re- ruralized and in fact the works of man were being recycled by the forces of nature.

>> This particular picture was so moving, the grass has almost become a carpet in this surface.
