>> I feel that what I am doing is for a good cause, for the right cause to save Pakistan from extremists and militants and to build regional security. I know the dangers are there, but I'm prepared to take those risks.

>> In December 2007, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated at an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi. Her death triggered a national crisis in Pakistan that eventually led to the departure of then President Pervez Musharraf. Protests and the threat of impeachment compelled Musharraf who had been President since 1999 when he took over in a military coup to resign and leave the country in exile. Musharraf returned to Pakistan this year in March to run for a seat in parliament in the country's general elections. It seems though that he misread the political climate in Pakistan and his conviction that he could freely contest the elections was naive.

Very soon after arriving in Pakistan, Musharraf found himself under house arrest facing various charges that had been levied against him while he was in exile including for his supposed involvement in the assassination of Bhutto in 2007. In mid- August he was finally indicted on some of these charges including both his connection to Bhutto's death as well as a charge of treason tied to his 1999 military coup where he toppled then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It just so happens that Nawaz Sharif won the last election and is once again Prime Minister of Pakistan. Musharraf is now retired, but the fact that a once top ranking military figure in Pakistan can now face the justice of its civilian government presents something of a landmark moment for Pakistan.

For roughly half the country's independent existence, Pakistan has been ruled under the sway of its generals. Musharraf's case is a sign perhaps that the military's overwhelming grip on Pakistani politics may be somewhat lessening.
