## Transcript

>> At least two people on Ukraine are dead Wednesday after a violence erupted between anti- government protestors and police, marking the first deaths since protest began two months ago. This was the scene in Kiev Wednesday. Billowing black smoke and explosions. European media outlets report the violence kicked off after riot police began dismantling barricades where protestors were located in downtown Kiev. Early Wednesday morning, protestors were seen throwing mullets of cocktails toward police, a familiar sight, but BBC reports riot police began firing on protestors when they got too close.

Although riot police have previously used rubber bullets, two of the men killed in the squirmish were shot with live ammunition. The third man reportedly fell off a ledge while fighting with police. A spokeswoman for the City Health Department said he survived the fall and was being treated at a high hospital. Russian news outlet, RT, reports Ukrainian authorities have allowed police to use smoke, tear gas, stun grenades, and have lifted the ban when using water cannons in below freezing temperatures. This is the fourth day of fighting between police and protestors in what had been a relatively peaceful demonstration.

The most recent clashes began this past weekend when a protest ban went into effect. Their protest began in November when Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych rejected a European Union Integration Pact for a Russian bailout package worth billions of dollars. While President Yanukovych expressed regret for the deaths, Ukraine's Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said part of the protesters who were bouncing on the edge of peaceful protests have overstepped this edge as well as the edge of Christian moral principles. These are criminals who must be held to account for their actions. Yanukovych has previously said he would be willing to negotiate with the opposition, but Al Jazeera reports he refused to meet with an opposition leader Tuesday.

At least one opposition leader, Yuriy Lutsenko, said the opposition would be better served starting a provisional government rather than waiting for negotiations to happen. Following the reports of the deaths, ITV says the European Union is considering taking action against Ukraine. For TIME, I'm Christian Bryant.
