I'm the Director, Farm School NYC. Farm School NYC is a comprehensive professional training program for adults who are learning sustainable agriculture within the context of food justice and community building here in New York City. [ MUSIC ] We're here today at / g (" Talkwelll / g ") community farm to talk with farm school NYC current and past students. Really have a conversation about urban farming, education, and people's connection to community. [ MUSIC ] I think from my point of view the biggest misconception About urban farming is that it's new. Like it's this new thing that just happens in hipster Williamsburg or something. Urban farming is this old as cities are. Then there's the other extreme and people think that we're just in abandoned lots. Urban ag fits in every circumstance differently, and so you look at what people are doing And Atlanta versus Houston versus Detroit and like it takes on a different, depending on kinda what the space available is and what the needs of the community are. And I think another simple misconception is that it's impossible. Like what, are you farming in the Bronx? Like yeah, it's a thing that happens. In addition to feeding people, there's also kind of that social gathering. And that community aspect that I think brings people together and it's not just about growing food it's part of a bigger picture. To me the Urban farming is very very important. It's a place where people from the city can learn how to grow their own food but it's also a place Where we can talk to each other. [ MUSIC ] When I think of [ UNKNOWN ] I think of people and communities having the direct say and where is the seed coming from? Who grew it, is it a high breed, is it a [ UNKNOWN ] They have so many little buzz words and sound bites and catch phrases falling around and then This term organic, like just look that up in the dictionary. There's a real definition, and it means things that are living. And then really understand what that means in your relationship to it. Does a farm need to have an organic certification on it for you to be okay with it? What does that certification even mean? How much does it cost? Most people from the farm school are looking to build and alternate way of life, a way of interconnecting with each other. We are not looking for independence in the sense where we are really trying to find ways to connect with each other to build an alternative system to what is out there. I'm always like amazed at like how people from different course and classes are like totally in touch to know each other. And I'm like, I'm glad that's happening. [ LAUGH ] But in a way, I'm also like, how do we keep that happening?
