## Transcript

Thursday marks one year since the U. S. Supreme Court ruled portions of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. In June of 2013, same- sex couples were granted new rights and protections on the Federal level. The Los Angeles times reports, by striking down Section 3, the Supreme Court in effect gave gay spouses legal standing, but stopped short of legalizing same- sex marriage. The amended laws have been on the books for a year, but some changes haven't trickled down until much more recently. It was in June of this year that the headlines appeared about Obama Administration's plans to officially extend more benefits to same sex couples, including the Family Medical Leave Act.

The timing is due in part Obama directing Attorney General Eric Holder to thoroughly review existing laws that now change under the Supreme Court's June 2013 ruling. Last Friday, Holder issued a formal report on the state of same sex benefits across federal agencies. The review found areas where new rights could be extended within existing laws and road blocks in other areas. Statutes governing the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs in particular do not allow benefits for same sex couples. White house officials told the Hill the administration is pushing for legislation to amend these statutes.
