## Transcript

[ SOUND ] On Wednesday, Mitt Romney began a three day tour of New Hampshire, the state whose January tenth primary's critical to his political fortunes. I caught up with Romney on his campaign bus, going from Hanover on the state's western border to Ashland and we sat down for an interview. We talked at some length about what Romney expects will be ferosious attacks from democrats, if he's the republican nominee, on his tenure at Bain Capital. That's the firm where Romney worked for many years, making him a multimillionaire. But his tenure there has been politically controvesial because many of the companies in which Bain invested laid off American workers and moved jobs overseas.

That record has been an issue in Romney's previous campaigns, and we talked about how he expects it to play out this time. David Axelrod, who as you know, works for the president, says the presidential elections are MRIs of the soul, that over time and the course, particularly, of the general election, the country gets to know the candidates, through everything, that goes back and forth of the campaign. Do you agree with that? Well, I, I think they'll know something about the people in [ INAUDIBLE ] in some depth although I think there's a lot about the President that we're still learning. so, I'm not sure we, we fully understood who Barack Obama was before he became the, the President of the United States.

I think we're still learning that. I also think that a campaign is about an MRI of the economy and the record of the incumbent. And I know the President will try and do everything that he can, he can't, to try and kill our nominee, to to brutalize them, to distort their life and their record. But what he can't hide, no matter all the, the, despite all the money that he'll amass, he can't hide his record. And the fact that he's been president at a time when Americans have suffered and he hasn't turned this economy around. At the last stop, you got a question about Bane Capital, and you get asked about it all the time.

And And as you've said over the last few weeks, if you're the nominee, there's no doubt that the White House will come after you. The Obama campaign. But I want to talk about how you feel about, about what happened on your watch. What would you say to those workers now? Just personally. Look, I have experienced firsthand the change in people's lives as they lose employment. I've described those circumstances. I understand that in a way I think a lot of people in my circumstances do not understand it because I've served as a pastor in my church and worked with people who are out of work. I know the huge human cost that's associated with With an enterprise going out of business.

You, with, with out question it's an awful and terrible human cost and you do everything in your power to maintain the growth and success of enterprises. But sometimes, that's simply not possible. As I was riding to your event today, I was listening to Rush Limbaugh, and he was, as he sometimes does, going after you. He was saying, he, he was disappointed that you [ UNKNOWN ] Used in an interview the night before to call the President a Socialist. Do you think Rush Limbaugh has too much influence in Republican politics? Do you think his role in the party is, is excessive, and he's excessive at times?

Rush Limbaugh has a, a, an audience, that speaks a very important voice. I, I, I don't begrudge him the great success he's had, and the influence. influence he has. Sometime he's agreed with me, sometimes disagreed with me. And you know, so I, I can only look with him, at him, and say congratulations, well done, you've built quite a following. So you don't agree with some people like Senator McCain who'd said, people like Rush Limbaugh, that some of the talk show radio hosts have too much influence on the party You know I, I let people choose their own course. If they want to listen to certain voices and find them to be compelling that's their right to do so.

It doesn't mean that I agree with those voices but I, I am certainly not going to suggest to the American people that they turn off their radio and not listen to someone who I may or may not agree with. By in large Rush Limbaugh speaks a number of conservative principals that that a lot of us agree with. How would you rate the, the relative strengths of the two parties right now in appealing to Hispanic voters? [ SOUND ] I don't think either parties done a particularly superb job at being able to take its message to Hispanic voters. The President ran on a platform saying he was gonna put in place immigration reform, some kind.

Got a lot of supports from the Hispanic community and had the house and the senate and did nothing. Despite the fact that he had both houses and his own party, he did nothing. I think he broke a pro, promise to the Hispanic community. The Republican message to the Hispanic community is we're the party of opportunity. We want America to be the best place in the world. For you to achieve your dreams. I don't think we communicate that as well as we could I, and should. Governor, thank you.
