The country's golden boy Olympian had killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, an up- and- coming model. He was arrested and charged with murder. >> A video obtained by Sky News showing Pistorius at a gun range is making the media rounds, just in time for the trial to start. >> In these pictures uncovered by Sky News, the athlete shows his prowess at handling a gun. >> Start when you're ready. >> Yeah, ready. Take out. >> Earlier this week, a judge allowed the media to broadcast the trial, putting the athlete's dramatic story even further into the public eye. >> It looked like a Valentine's Day surprise gone wrong, but now looks like something more sinister. The world, at first shocked, is now obsessed with the dark side of South Africa's golden boy. >> Pistorius admits he shot Steenkamp 4 times through the bathroom door on Valentine's Day last year. But he maintains he thought she was an intruder. According to his defense team, he felt vulnerable because he wasn't wearing his prosthetic legs at that time. So that makes the upcoming trial very nuanced. >> It's fairly unusual because the accused has admitted to the criminal act. And so the only issue and dispute for the prosecution to prove is Mr. Pristorius' state of mind at the time of the shooting. >> NBC's Keith Morrison spoke with the prosecuting attorney on the case. He said the neighbor's testimony could be valuable to the prosecution. >> And if people said, we had-- can show scream, can show the screen, you know, it's gonna be pretty much hard for you to argue that. You still didn't know that the person who was screaming was your girlfriend. >> But all the media attention has the Guardian questioning if cases with this much publicity can ever be fair. A 24- hour news channel dedicated solely to coverage of the trial will start broadcasting Sunday night in South Africa, according to The Independent. Already, 13 key pieces of evidence for the prosecution have been leaked to the public. Much of it focuses on the neighbor's testimony, forensic evidence of the bullet, and whether Steenkamp was in pajamas or fully clothed. Prosecutors think even more evidence can be found on one of Pistorius' locked iPhones, which he claims to have forgotten the code to. South African police have asked Apple for help in cracking the iPhone. The prosecution thinks the text and calls on it, or not on it, if he didn't call for help, could aid the case. The prosecution team said it has 107 witnesses lined up for Pistorius' trial.
