He is now the unofficial song leader of the annual Gay Pride Parade in Jerusalem. >> In Israel, religion is part of the state, we have no separation. In many terms, gay couples or GLBT couples have almost the same rights like a straight married couple, but not by law, only by the court system which makes it reversible. We have to make it by law. This is why I'm here in Parliament. I'm trying to promote these kinds of laws that would allow marriage, would allow parenthood-- would allow adoption. >> Up until recently Horowitz was a prominent television journalist, editing a world- affairs program for Israeli National Television, but he shifted to politics in order to have a greater impact in the arena of human rights. Now, he is fighting for the legalization of same sex marriages and full adoption rights for gay couples. Tough in a country where all marriages must be conducted by religious institutions. >> I have three children. Two of them has the rights from the Knesset and one of them, my gay son-- all his rights come from the court and it depends. Every day it can collapse. >> Homosexuals in Israel are generally better off than most other Middle Eastern countries where they are persecuted, flogged and sometimes killed. >> Personally, I came out of the closet many years ago-- more than 20 years ago. My family, my community, my friends accepted it with almost no problems at all, but, you know, my personal story is not the story of many young people today. Israel is kind of an island of liberalism concerning the GLBT community in some particular sectors. Here in Jerusalem, it's not very much well accepted, I mean at all within, for example, our Palestinian sector or within the Ultra- Orthodox religious sector. -[ Foreign Language ] >> This year's counter demonstrations were led by Baruch Marzel, a religious Fundamentalist from Hebron. He was once part of a group labeled a terrorist organization by the United States in Israel. He is an advocate for the transfer of Arabs from the State of Israel and has now set his sights on gays. >> If they have a disease they should go to a doctor, to a psychiatrist or go right home and not to go out to the streets with their problems. It's written in the Bible that God will [ unk ] the people that do these kinds of things in the Holy Land of Israel. In the Holy City of Israel it's even worse. God hates these kinds of things. >> You know how many people are going to die because of that party going on? You know how many men are going to be sleeping with men then orgies and God knows what? You know how many are going to bring back HIV to their families? You know how many people are going to die as a result? You know if a man can marry a man, why can't I marry a chicken? You know, I have rights too, right? >> I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. >> There are always all sorts of disturbances, attacks, people throwing things at us, people trying to threaten us. This is a common sight in Jerusalem and we have to fight it. This just proved the necessity of this parade-- of this event.
