How are you today? >> Michael Scherer, the TIME Washington bureau chief got a phone call from this woman who represented herself as Samantha West. What Samantha does whenever she calls you is starts asking you if you have health insurance. >> Well, I'm calling about an online request you once made about health insurance coverage. >> She sounds like a very talkative, more or less eloquent young lady. Michael found that peculiar, so he decided to try out a couple of task. >> Hey, are you a robot? >> Oh, what? No. I am a real person. Maybe we have a bad connection. I'm sorry about that. >> And they gave us the phone number so we tried calling it back. >> I can get you a quote in about 5 minutes, okay? >> Are you a robot? >> I am a real person. Can you hear me okay? >> Eventually, I just wanted to get her to admit that she was a robot. >> If you could say the words I'm not a robot, it would really mean a lot to me. >> I am a real person. Can you hear me okay? >> There's something about having a series of conversations with the robot Samantha West. It's hard not to feel like you're talking to a human even though you're sure you're not, but you know, the voice sounds human and she seems hurt. >> Just say I'm not a robot, please. >> I am a real person. >> I mean you shouldn't feel bad for being mean to-- I don't know, maybe you shouldn't feel-- like feel bad for being mean to a robot, but it inspired empathy somehow. >> I understand. >> If it is the kind of technology that Alexis Madrigal thinks it is, the complex and theories of pre- recorded statements that a non- native English speaker in a call center somewhere knows to deploy at the appropriate moment, the ramifications are significantly less far reaching than if we were dealing with some kind of sentient robot being the new-- that deny that she was a robot. But, you know, it's a window into a much stranger future that we are probably heading toward in which Samantha West- like robots do start calling us and having all manner of conversation.
